I use both WhatsAp and WeChat. In answer to your questions, I think the best thing I can say to help you is that WhatsAp is very similar to WeChat.  I only use WeChat for basic messages with contacts in China, whereas I use WhatsAp extensively to message, chat and speak to friends, family and business contacts in the West. So WeChat may have functions and features I am not aware of. But basically I think they are the same.

WhatsAp currently is free but it is scheduled to start costing in the not too distant future, although I don't think the costs are going to be very high. I am not sure how you will pay the costs in China but I expect that WhatsAp will try to have a means of paying in China.

I suggest that you definitely should try hooking up to WhatsAp and getting used to using it if you're in contact with people in the West regularly. At the same time WeChat also works very well and is easy to use from outside China too. So if you're only wanting to use it to communicate with one person, then he/she could just as easily register with WeChat and use the English version.

I hope that helps.

WeChat is far superior to WhatsApp. WhatsApp is also technically banned in China (God-Knows Why !) If you already have WhatsApp on your phone, then you CAN use it in China, however, WhatsApp requires regular updates and these cannot be accessed from within China without a VPN.

WeChat and/or QQ are THE most popular APPs in China. Personally, I have used them all (including WhatsApp, Line, FaceBook etc, etc), and I would rate WeChat as being far better than any of them, including QQ.
