Letter From a Real Nigerian Scammer

From: China 浙江(zhe jiang) 杭州(hang zhou ) @clmservice Time : 2010-04-22 23:21:14
John Abbot has just published an article on CLM emagazine entitled "Letter From a Real Nigerian Scammer" in which he presents a letter received by one or more Chinese women members from username "john123". One lady provided the letter but more than one reported the scumbag scammer. The article is found under the topic of "Online Dating". We're not quite set up to provide links in the forum but will be shortly, so meanwhile please go to CLM eMagazine and check out the article and the letter.

In his article he advises that CLM is on the verge of banning all Nigerians, Ghanans and citizens of certain other African countries from the website because the number of Scammers from those nations are just too plentiful to bother trying to weed out the good from the bad. John then asks the good and honest Nigerian and Ghanan citizens who are members of CLM to comment on practical and effective ways ways to get rid of the scammers without penalizing their good countrymen.

While the invitation is specifically to citizens of the problem countries who will be affected, we open it to anyone to provide constructive suggestions on how to deal with this problem. CLM does not wish to penalize the innocent but we may have to in order to better protect the majority of members who do not deserve to ever have to receive a letter like that set out in John's article.

I am in full support of the efforts being made to put an end to the activities of scammers. The damage such people do to the interests of both Chinese women and foreign men seeking a partner online cannot be underestimated. I am especially concerned about how Chinese women are now starting to view the western man. It is difficult already to deal with both the language and cultural barriers without having to worry about the activities of scammers and I am sure all members will agree. Its a great pity they cannot face the Chinese Legal System since that would undoubtedly put an end to the problem if we could bring scammers before the courts in China to face real sentences. Anyway thank you for the efforts being made to protect us online.

We'd like to thank all of you who commented and those who chose to send letters instead. There seems to be two camps into which most persons commenting fall. 1. Ban all members from the bad countries and take all other steps to protect members from Scammers, or 2. Members are adults and need to protect themselves - do what you can but mostly "Let the buyer beware". We haven't made a final decision yet, but one thing we've noted is that not one member from any of the countries in question chose to comment or to write. We believe that we must never assume all members are internet savvy and know how to play the game. The ladies, many of whom are new to both the internet and the world outside China are the primary target of these scammers. Can we attribute the wisdom of Mr. Lincoln to them?

It's an interesting idea.

If you chose to ban Nigerians and Africans then you'd deal with it quite well.
It maybe unfair to the SMALL minority of Nigerians and Africans BUT FAR MORE are being harmed at the current rate.

Oh there's another thing I would like to add,

Chinese women are not exactly on the same level of experience in realizing who is a scammer and who is not. I am not trying to offend but having seen women asking "is this a liar". Every foreigner saw the writing and pointed: "YES the grammar, the sentences.." It's a Scammer.

So on that note option 2. isn't really the best and is certainly not helping the future.
You won't really be helping the new ladies or men.

That's my 10 kroner.
