The bigger point , it is a scam. It could be a he OR she for any matter. Nigerian scams are notorious for using woman, young children to write letters. Hence the poor language. Anybody that has posted anything on Craigslist has probably gotten this trash, in different manners and disguises-to fit the situation.
Best defences have been all lined out here, with a good second opinion from a successful, trustworthy friend. Good luck

I agree that he is a liar and a scammer...any American graduating from elementary school would know how to write better...his spelling and grammar is atrocious. Don't waste your time or money with this loser...

I will tell you this person is a scam. If he was real and has the education of engineer
he would use better sentence structure, spell correctly and have better manners.

Do not even answer.

Best of luck to you.

I agree with you about this matter, both sexes do it all the time and have been since the beginning of time. Cheat, lie, steal anything to get ahead.
Such is life. However the US Army does let out contracts -- did in Iraq and do in Afghanistan. How do I know --- Been there.

You people are missing the point with all the " He , and American etc... finger pointing ) Just because the letter said HE WAS SUCH. Get the beam out of your eye. This is what I got in trouble for to start with----assumptions. You people read that a man wrote a letter to a woman. You assumed so. It could be a woman. Just because HE said HE was an engineer, is it so? Evidently, in your mind. All the replies are " he this , he that, the engineer etc.". The big picture that got me into trouble was----wait for it---- it is a scam, by man, women, or beast ! Look past who it was sent to, man or women. Look at the contex. Eveyone is focusing on the fact it was sent from man to woman. You are more educated than that. What sex am I ? Don't dogpile when you don't know the facts !
I could say , I was a man, and send you a Email from the USA and say it was from the moon, When really it is from the UK, and I was a women. What upsets me, men are jumping on unfounded bandwagons. Just beware. Don't put a gender to it. Bashing is not the point.

Why is it a he?? Automatically,, because the letter was to a woman? Don't be a bigot. I could say you are a closet queen on your same premise. Good luck

@fireman197 - I don't think anyone is actually assuming that the scammer is a he, but it's pretty natural to simply say "he" because the scammer had assumed a male persona. After all, in the letter he introduced himself as "Martin", so it is just natural to think of him as "he". I honestly think that our Chinese ladies are aware that scammers can be male or female regardless of how they present themselves.

However, having said that, I have to tell you that statistically the majority of independent scammers do seem to be male based on what we see. By independent I mean not including people working for large scam sites such as, AsianBeauties, com and other sites like that, and not including people employed as computer call center girls for the large scale scam operations run from places like the Philippines.

Of scammers who are operating on their own, or as members of small groups, our professional scammer hunter estimates that 80 to 85% are centered in Nigeria or Ghana and that the vast majority of these, whether they present as male or female, are in fact men. In this case our "Martin" certainly seems to be one of the independent type of scammers, so the likelihood is that "he" probably (but not for certain) really is a he.

But your point is well taken that regardless of whether any particular scammer is a man or a woman, they do not reflect real men or real women in general and we should avoid thinking in terms of "this Scammer seems to be a man so men are bad". Scammers are bad, period. It is not a gender issue, so thanks for reminding us of that.

"...the only child of my parent"
That 'term' is always used by Nigerians or Ghana Black African Scammers.. Believe me ... I've been approached by the best of them and all show various levels of 'trickiness'
I am convinced that there must be degree course in these countries for this type of 'skill' because these guys are second to none!

sometimes dating agencies sell profiles to other dating agencies- but in this case i would say its a scammer- of course is he was in afganistan who would not be telling this to a complete stranger in any case.
