On the balcony, the woman was busy trying to find a place for the orchids. Her vegetables and herbs were in plastic containers in sizes of rather on the large side, leaving not much room for anything else on the floor. So, for the time being, the woman decided to set the orchids on the concrete guard rail, thinking to hang them from a nail tomorrow when there was daylight. Read more…

"We've got 5000 years of culture and history" tends to be the stock answer when the question including 'why' is asked in China . 'So what ? Australian aboriginals have 40,000 years of history, does that make them better than anyone else?"... Read more…

~‘I’ll take you to a good western restaurant’ a friend of mine said to me back in 2009. ‘Great’ said I,with ecstatic enthusiasm. Not knowing a single word of Chinese back then, my friend took over the ordering and soon I found myself with a plate of steak, chips and salad - awesome ! - or so I thought...... The following was posted by YinTingYu as a comment on Achelle's recent blog "Of Dogs and Men" but we felt it was deserving of a guest post because it give such an insightful and imaginitive description of another side of the discussion about the killing of animals for food. Silence is the reason why I'm here. Time seems to go slower here. I love this feeling when I can hear my own heart beating and can be myself, no one's watching. I feel that I'm closer to something . . . something that I can't comprehend. This feeling that surrounds me every time I'm here is like when I was at my Mother's home and felt unconditional love. I am closer to home here than anywhere else and I'm accepted for who I am and part of a bigger picture. Read more…

Forgive me…….By now many of you must think I am some kind of ‘sexual pervert’ with my ramblings about the various ‘Types’ of women you can find on CLM and all the other ‘sexual connotations’ I have referred to in my somewhat ‘controversial blogs’ Read more…

Few days ago I made a comment to John Abbot, I told him that I really feel that the only truly happy people in this world are the idiots, the imbeciles, the completely mad and the children.  The more you know, the more you become aware of what is going on and consequently the more you suffer. I’ve been bombarded for the past few months at work with one of my pet peeves here in China, and it’s not the Chinese that seem to drive me to insanity these days. Its disrespectful foreigners, who complain about China being terrible. I’m pretty content with knowing I’m in another country and that culture differences will come up from time to time. I accept that because before I even came to China I looked at the culture and studied as much as I could before I stepped foot in this country. I didn’t want to come off as another one of the jerks from America that the rest of the world hates. Read more…

But Americans already know that. The whole world knows it. As a serious public health issue, the American diet has been talked about countless times everywhere, by health experts, the media, and the public all over the world. The great U.S of A acknowledges the problem; obese Americans acknowledge the problem; diabetic Americans acknowledge the problem. You get the point. Americans get the point, too, but the problem persists. Read more…

If you’ve been following my story so far of my return to America to see my friends and family, you’ve probably got a pretty grim picture of what I encountered when I was there. It is true that there were some terrible things that I went up against, from willful ignorance to the food not being edible; however, it was not all bad. My friends and I shared some great times at our local drinking hole, and I was able to make up for the bad food with cooking myself on the grill like old times. Although, the good didn’t erase the horror I felt inside for my friends and what was left of what I called home. Read more…

As I mentioned in my previous article my first week back in America didn’t go quite as expected. The town that had been my home for nearly ten years had seen better days. It wasn’t as bad as some towns I’m sure but to me it was an extremely depressing sight to see. In my head I envisioned my return home being a triumphant return. I would share my success with my friends and they would share their own success stories over their own adversity. It turns out my first week would be a clumsy attempt at me to readjust in my own culture. Read more…
