When the woman regained consciousness, the things she noticed first were the hardness of the kitchen floor and its coolness against her bare skin. Her pajama top was open, and one of her breasts had a bright red bite mark on it, but in all likelihood greenish purple by the morning. She covered her breasts and pulled her pajama bottom back up from her knees. If it weren't for the smell of smoke, she wouldn't have moved yet. Out of the utter confusion and despair, she wasn't ready to see the state she was in. The smoke, however, was getting thick, and she forced herself to get up and look around. Read more…

On the balcony, the woman was busy trying to find a place for the orchids. Her vegetables and herbs were in plastic containers in sizes of rather on the large side, leaving not much room for anything else on the floor. So, for the time being, the woman decided to set the orchids on the concrete guard rail, thinking to hang them from a nail tomorrow when there was daylight. Read more…

So Yong wanted flowers. Usually this is one of her easier requests of her life in the West to fulfill. Certainly much easier than her request for “real” Chinese food, which requires a seventy-mile trip to Chicago’s Chinatown. Read more…

“A time machine?” The Rajah shook his head. “Not quite… I think of it more as a Peeping Time Machine.  It shows the future, but only the kinky parts. It was created through quantum perversion physics. You know, the mathematics that developed after America outlawed heterosexuality as being a sick misunderstanding of the true dynamics between men and women.  Dr. Bobbit conclusively proved - via voting on social media - that the male organ has been created by evolution so that women have something to chop off when they get angry.” Read more…

Julia was still sound asleep as Daniel gingerly crept into the bedroom. He quietly slipped off his clothes and slid slowly into bed beside her. He wasn't safe yet. It was nearly 4am and it was cold outside. If Julia unconsciously came too close and touched his cool body, she may awaken and ask questions. Questions that Daniel wouldn't know how to answer. Especially in a way that would satisfy her insatiable appetite for knowing how he spends every second of every day. Read more…

I recently told a really good Chinese friend of mine ..  maybe one of the myriad of reasons for the misunderstandings between Chinese and Westerners belong to Ethnocentric social behavior on both sides of the proverbial fence.   Read more…

When I heard the hens singing, “Hens lay eggs?!”  I put down my basket on the table, took off gloves, dried my hands, and I ran to the chicken house. Look! There it is! The two black hens were singing there, a shining egg was lying in the nest. I picked up the egg carefully: it was warm, sticked with feather; I cleaned it with my hands, held it and ran to tell my husband and kid happily…… Read more…

I had time to kill at the airport in Bangkok waiting to connect to my short internal flight to Phuket. I parked my backside on one of those ubiquitous grey honeycombed airport metal benches - they are not built for comfort! There was ample time to change the SIM card in my phone and call Noi. I was nervous as I had never spoken to her before; only communicated by email for the past two months. On dialing her number, the ring tone sounded for a few seconds and my heart was beating faster. What am I doing here? I’m thousands of miles away from home, Britain, and in a strange land. It was my first taste of Asia travel. A slight panic rose in my chest. Read more…

The race for the US Presidency is on.  Discussions about this and other important world affairs have been made in the comments to my last article, “Perceptions of China – Part 3”.  Rather than muddying the waters however of a discussion about aspects of China that was the original intention of the "Perceptions" article, it’s become apparent that the US election and other crucial political and economic issues should have a blog all their own. I've been wondering, for a while now, about who's going to write an article about the perils lurking in the west or, in fact, in the entire world. There are a great number of people who are willing to follow their dreams and start new lives in a foreign country. So, this is my motivation for thinking that people, including Chinese and Asian ladies, should know a few things about their desired countries and the perils of the world. Read more…

Steam rose from the cups, floating slowly in the air, certainly not making my room warmer but surely making it look comfier. After I had set them down on the table, Kristy picked one of them up, drew her knees up into my oversized hoody that she had put on after we both had realized she was freezing because of the dank towel and nestled herself cozily into her chair. She looked like she was ready to watch a movie. The only thing that seemed to be missing was a bucket of popcorn–preferably with butter, (I guessed)–for her utter and complete comfort. Read more…

And there she was, coming through the door and closing it quietly after she had taken a shower. The big towel was wrapped tightly around her body–her clothes were still in the dryer, spinning in the hot air, just like my thoughts spun in my overheated head, quickly and urgently and in need of a cool-down cycle. I sat in a chair in my dry clothes and added to my attire a guitar, setting on my lap as protection (a cooling system) between me and her hot body. Read more…

There was a short interval of nervous silence after Kristy had sat down. Neither of us knew what to say or how to start. It was as if we were back in kindergarten where if a boy liked a girl, instead of saying something nice to her–even a simple “hi” would've done the job at that age–he just pulled her pigtails and ran away with a nervous laugh. Well, Kristy didn't have pigtails to pull, so I didn't run away; I just smiled at her nervously and asked, “Do you remember me?” Read more…
