We wandered around to the night market once more in Chiang Mai. A good excuse to drink another couple of Guinness. After all, I am a creature of habit. It had been a satisfying day. I could now look forward to collecting the D Max in two days’ time. Read more…

From the kitchen, the woman went to the hallway. After checking her dress in the mirror there, she quickly ran her fingers through her hair one more time, then opened the door. In the doorway, a young man stood, slightly out of breath after climbing six flight of stairs. In his hands, he held a potted cactus, the size of a soccer ball. He looked to be in his early twenties. Sweat covered his face, and a lock of hairs stuck to his forehead. His gray T-shirt was soaked through, leaving dark spots around his armpits and on his chest. His chinos, loose-fitting, were cut at knee hight. His bony legs ended up in a pair of battered running shoes. He had abnormally large feet. If hard times were to sneak upon him and in the lack of a job, he could have easily tried out for an elite swimming team. With his lean body and those huge flippers of his, he could have even made it to the Olympics. Looking somewhat startled, the young man apologized for being late with the delivery. Then, as if in need to say more, he opened his mouth but, in the next second, quickly swallowed the words and looked behind him. One of the woman's neighbors, an elderly man with a walking stick, was getting down the stairs. Read more…

With her arms crossed over her chest, the woman held the comforter as if trying to shield herself against whoever it was in the dark. Despite the insufficient protection the blanket provided, it actually stopped her from screaming out in fear. A little while later, though, when something grazed her forehead, she almost cried out. The only reason for staying silent was that the touch was soft and came with a scent that surprised and muted her. The smell was of orchids; she was able to identify it right away. Someone was touching her forehead, face, and hands with the velvety petals of the flowers. Read more…

After she had been pulled off the bed, the woman lay supine and in horror on the hardwood floor. Her husband, very unsteady on his feet, stood over her body, feeling smug after his demonstration of spineless dominance. His clothes and breath reeked of smoke and alcohol, and a dense haze of delirium clouded his eyes. He slurred something that the woman couldn't fully understand. Having no idea how to respond, she kept quiet. She didn't dare to even breathe or blink. Like a fish out of water, she just lay there, submissive, on the floor, clearly still in shock from what had just transpired. The old bruise on her back began to ache again, pounding a steady rhythm with her racing heart. She wished—if butterfly she could be no more—to be a fish, hiding from the world deep down in an abyss of eternal darkness. She wanted to be anything but a woman who got less respect from her husband than a homeless, hapless beggar. Read more…

The last divorce, number three, was painful. We had been together for nigh on twenty-five years, and two children together and one grandchild. Both of the kids were grown up and had long fled the nest at the time of my last divorce. They had their own lives to lead. Of course, I would miss seeing my grandchild, a girl now aged six. No matter if you believe or not, we individual create our world especial through our mindsets and thoughts in our head. If the mindsets and thoughts there are confused and messy, the real life and world related with us will be same messy too. If we are not sure on “who are you” and “what you want”, we are actually not ready for any new relationship until we have already figured it out. Read more…

Before I start this title, I want to say thank you for all of the comments on my first blog. You guys make me more confident to continue. :-)   Some friends thought I am a very brave and strong woman when read my story, but I consider myself a very common Chinese woman, even a little shy and cowardly some times.  I remember when I just graduated from college, because of lack of confidence, I lost the chance of a  good job. I still remember that was a Taiwanese owned factory, the man interviewing me said that the best job for me was to be a wife, not a sales lady...:-) Read more…

Four years ago, my parents backed wuhan from zhuhai, living in my home, ran dad's book reprint. There were two old friends visited my parents a day, they are university teachers, all older than me. After they left, my father sighed, "alas, they are all imperfect family." Their family all have no master. I realized that I am also an imperfect family woman. Dad's words are very precise as a writer. Read more…

When I was a child, in my generation we did not have too many toys to go around. Boys would get soccer balls, bikes, tricycles, marbles, few board games like “Monopoly” and such and the girls would get dolls, doll houses, toy tea sets etc. Each gender would have a dozen or so of classical toys. Many of our toys we had to build ourselves from scratch using our imagination and creativeness and the materials available to us.. Read more…

To pick up the pieces of a broken heart and try to put them back together it is not an easy task, most people that have been there know this. In Part I we discussed scenarios that were guaranteed to destabilize any normal human being. I wrote about some extreme scenarios, very graphic, on purpose. The truth is that even if it is not that dramatic, it will still hurt us nevertheless. Perhaps the simplest ones are the worst, because it will keep resounding in our mind “why”? If there was not an obvious cause for the disruption, the mystery will haunt us and will drive us bananas. Read more…

You were feeling this for a while. Some strange and awkward thing kept lingering in the air. A ghostly sensation that something beyond your wildest dreams was about to unfold. The signs in the beginning were subtle and discrete. He/she would interrupt abruptly a phone conversation as soon as you got home (no kiss or greetings at the door anymore) or used an encrypted telephone “that was bought to prevent the competition to have access to sensitive information belonging to the company a.k.a. industrial espionage”. A Machiavellian excuse. Read more…
