When the woman regained consciousness, the things she noticed first were the hardness of the kitchen floor and its coolness against her bare skin. Her pajama top was open, and one of her breasts had a bright red bite mark on it, but in all likelihood greenish purple by the morning. She covered her breasts and pulled her pajama bottom back up from her knees. If it weren't for the smell of smoke, she wouldn't have moved yet. Out of the utter confusion and despair, she wasn't ready to see the state she was in. The smoke, however, was getting thick, and she forced herself to get up and look around. Read more…

The following article is based (mostly) on something I read online in the New York Times titled "Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person" by ALAIN de BOTTON. It was so pertinent to dating, including Chinese dating, that I had to share it with you..... Read more…

I just don’t get it. Many members on sites such as CLM are divorced and already have kids, right? So unless you plan to have more kids, then why marry? It may sound like a strange question to ask on a dating site, but consider the argument for a few moments... Read more…

I recently received the following letter from a member who has found his match in a lovely Chinese woman through dating on CLM.  He had some questions arising from their current situation, and I thought those questions, and my answers, might be of interest to other members who are now in his same situation, or are hoping to be in it soon. Here's his letter: Read more…

I awoke earlier than usual in my hotel room this morning.  "What's that!", I wondered to myself.  There was an unusually large amount of car horn tooting and blaring going on, yet the time was only just after 6.00am.  I soon realised what had happened.  My ear plugs had fallen out! Read more…

The Airbus A340 from Hainan airlines roared in the runway and took off like an Asian tiger. In the high tech era we get a direct flight from Toronto to Beijing in just 13 hours. I loved this route, far better than to fly over the Pacific. If you live in the North of the US and will be flying to China to meet your sweetheart, please consider this route. The cost was $1,300 (Canadian currency) for a two-way ticket. Of course prices are different at different times of the year. At the time of high season in China or during the Chinese festivals it will cost you hundreds more. Please also consider Chicago too and as a port of entry in China, try Hong Kong or Shanghai, just shop around. Read more…

First and most important, I am elated to share the good news with all fellow members of CLM and ALM. Angela, my lovely Chinese wife to be, is fully recovered of her respiratory problem (it was probably a virus) and I am actually packing up my stuff to be heading to Beijing on June 3rd. God willing, everything will be fine and we will very soon be getting married. I will share the news and pictures of us celebrating our Chinese marriage with all of you. Read more…

Mom contact uncle li (he send the woman for the agent company charge fees between agent and nanny) come to our house to see if my appearance is ok to be a nanny in this morning. This is a story I have been somewhat reluctant to tell. Or at least I have been thinking and reflecting on it for a while, not wanting to shoot from the hip and provide my first undigested comments on it. In any case, I have come to some sort out conclusions about this and I would be interested in getting some feedback. Read more…

I was reading the other day that one of the changes made on the London Underground that increased customer satisfaction the most was not adding more trains, or cleaning the stations, having more female toilets, increased security or having smoother transit through the stations or anything else like it, it was actually providing a countdown timer for when the next train would arrive! People are curious about sex, and people are curious about China. So why has it taken so long for there to be a book about sex in China? I’m not sure, but with the publication of “Behind the Red Door: Sex in China” Richard Burger has filled an obvious need in the literature. Of course there have been other books on the topic. But most of them, to judge from the bibliography, have come from the academic arena, with the usual narrow focus and undoubtedly inscrutable prose. “Behind the Red Door,” by contrast, is a broad overview of the issue of sexuality in China aimed at the general reader that at the same time serves as an excellent introduction to modern China itself. In the last section, I argued that romantic love as it is understood in the West is alien to traditional Chinese thinking. Here, I will show what effect this has upon male-female relationships in contemporary China and what the implications are for those who want to date Chinese women. I will look broadly at two groups of women: older, more traditional women and the younger generation (ba ling hous and jiu ling hous). In both cases, it will turn out romantic love as it is understood in the West plays little role in the actual practice of relationships. Read more…

I am pretty certain I am going to catch a lot of flak for this column, especially given the reaction to my last column, where I was only reporting the views of others. Here I am going to put out my own point of view, and I am sure (or at least hope) it is going to be controversial. I have no problem if you disagree with me. All I ask is for you to realize that what follows represents a deeply held conviction formed after living more than three years in China, dating numerous Chinese women, talking to and interviewing countless others, discussing the matter with friends, doing a good deal of reading and some hard thinking on the subject. So I’m pretty convinced of this claim and doubt that anything is going to come along to argue me out of it. But feel free to go ahead. Read more…

If you have been anywhere near a middle school building in the last 2 weeks in China you would probably have found the surrounding roads devoid of cars and people, lots of police “crime scene investigation - do not cross” tape everywhere and a bevy of local ’pseudo-police’ sitting under umbrellas or shady trees looking menacing at the people passing by.
