As I've discovered, truth can be more horrific than fiction. This article will introduce you to some very disturbing events occurring right now within the USA and other developed countries. Akin to a malignant disease that's spreading like an ever-growing octopus, with blood-sucking tentacles everywhere. Almost in a literal sense. Read more…

It was sunset as I drove through the congested toll roads of Bangkok in the rented Hilux. The setting red sun shimmered and reflected on the plate glass of the high rise downtown buildings. It was going to take several hours to reach Noi’s home town of Kampheang Phet. I had the foresight to bring my GPS with me from England so I was confident that I would not get lost. Progress was slow on the toll roads, ironically called expressways, partly owing to the time of day as it was rush hour. Partly, owing to toll booths only being about two miles apart. I would stop at one and pay. In no time at all, I was forced to stop and pay at the next booth! And, the one after that! Read more…

The first few days in Thailand were perfect. I loved everything about it. The weather, the beaches, the food and Noi. Every day was an easy day just relaxing, eating in restaurants and a few beers in a bar. I was mindful that this was a holiday feeling. I was determined not to be seduced by the vacation atmosphere. There are no responsibilities when on vacation and dating a new, beautiful Asian woman. The hard yards come later when there are decisions to be made about serious matters such as accommodation, location and in our case - what to do about Kamon, Noi’s niece. Those things could wait. I was still in holiday mode. Read more…

This first time and my first month in Thailand also had their serious moments. It’s true to say the whole month had a holiday feel to it. Hell, Phuket is a great choice for a vacation. And, it’s even better if you are sharing that time with a Thai lady of your choice. Read more…

I awoke from my sleep of contentment. It was filled with pleasant dreams partly as a result of Noi’s welcome massage. My slumbers had eradicated all the tiredness of travel from England to Thailand. I looked forward to my second day in a new country and a new life. Dating was something I had forgotten. It was a distant memory from a distant past. Read more…

The international terminal at Chicago O’Hare is a relatively modest affair compared to its futuristic United counterpart at the same site, that airline’s largest, or compared to any of the four other terminals for that matter. Terminal 5 as it’s known is also separated from the rest of the airport so that reaching it requires either boarding an above ground train or getting on a shuttle and taking an escalator down to a nondescript waiting area.    My winning prize came on a sweltering summer day, on the weekend. I had to work in the restaurant from noon to 11pm on Saturday and Sunday as well. I was tired. The weather was humid. The kitchen was boiling. My hands were in hot water for hours and hours. We were extremely busy. By the time the restaurant slowed down, everybody was exhausted. I was packing the final load of plates up into the dishwasher after lunch when I heard one of the waitresses from behind saying, Read more…

Bore Warning! This blog has the potential to be the most boring blog I have written so far, so before I start I want to issue a ‘Bore Warning’. Any cross-cultural relationship is going to have ‘language problems’ and I want to talk about ways in which many of us can learn to overcome language barriers. Firstly I would like to say thanks and also sorry to Francis Bacon because I have stolen the name of one of his essays. May he rest in peace. Socrates said the unexamined life is not worth living, so this means I have to examine my life and that I have to think a lot, otherwise my life might not be worthwhile. Recently I have been thinking a lot about the difference between marriage and the single life. During this time I found Francis Bacon’s article “of Marriage and Single Life” and this is exactly what I would like to figure out now. I have read quite a lot on this topic of marriage and the single life and I am pretty sure it is in the interest of men only. In this sense it is quite like Plato’s The Republic, both of which present an ideal case in order to explain something. Read more…

In the evening, sitting on my bay window, I rested my head on his legs, feeling sad about the parting from H soon. He must return to the hotel that night, because his flight was in the early morning, and his former colleague would pick him up from the hotel and see him off in the airport. Read more…
