Peter lived for nearly a half-decade in China, including two as a Peace Corps volunteer, and is the author of Socrates in Sichuan: Chinese Students Search for Truth, Justice and the (Chinese) Way. It is the intention of his blog to foster the sort of intercultural understanding necessary for long term relationships.

Why I Prefer Chinese Women

Sex in China

People are curious about sex, and people are curious about China. So why has it taken so long for there to be a book about sex in China? I’m not sure, but with the publication of “Behind the Red Door: Sex in China” Richard Burger has filled an obvious need in the literature. Of course there have been other books on the topic. But most of them, to judge from the bibliography, have come from the academic arena, with the usual narrow focus and undoubtedly inscrutable prose. “Behind the Red Door,” by contrast, is a broad overview of the issue of sexuality in China aimed at the general reader that at the same time serves as an excellent introduction to modern China itself. Playful? Are You Kidding Me?

I feel I have to write this partly in retraction and partly in defense of a claim I made in the last article. There I had listed several traits that an article from a Western online dating site said that men found sexy in women, and I focused in particular on certain of these traits that Chinese women seemed to some degree challenged with respect to. One of these traits was playfulness. In response several men wrote back about how playful their Chinese girlfriends were. An experience I just had tonight reminded me that there is a certain type of playfulness I have found in Chinese women, but it is not a type we associated with the term in the West. Read more…

What Men Find Sexy in a Woman

OK, so I have been moonlighting recently. Not exactly moonlighting, because that would imply that what I was doing has some significant financial remuneration. Instead, I am being paid a pittance to write an advice column for a weekly paper in Chengdu. Titled “Love in Translation,” the column fields questions on the issues of Western men dating Chinese women. The reason I agreed to do this was because I had hoped it would help give me some additional street cred when I try to pitch a book about my adventures on this website. (And John I do give CLM some free publicity because I post my affiliation with each column). But so far, the whole thing has been more of a pain in the ass than it is worth, although I won’t know that entirely until when/if I write the book. Read more…

What, Me Negative?

I’ve already left a comment regarding the characterization of myself and other bloggers as pessimistic, negative and sordid. I think the comments to the column speak for themselves and uphold the integrity and the value of what has been written in the blogs. For myself, I have to say that this characterization of my attitude towards the process of dating Chinese women truly surprises me. In large part, I haven’t written about my recent experiences because, well, I am in China and it is pretty easy to find these blogs on a google search. But the fact is I am still actively dating Chinese woman and, given the pitfalls of dating in general and inter-cultural dating in specific, only an optimist or a crazy person could engage in this process. And at least I hope I’m not crazy. Read more…

Eat, Breathe, Leave

I’m a little hesitant about writing this blog in light of the concern expressed by one reader that the blogs are not specifically about Chinese women any more. However, since this does involve an issue that directly concerns anyone who is seriously considering a long term relationship with a Chinese woman, I think I will let it stand. Quite simply, you and your Chinese girlfriend/lover/spouse will have to find someplace to live, and the odds are she will probably want it to be in China. What I want to point out in this blog is that there are some reasons to try to talk her out of this. Read more…

What's Love Got To Do with It? (Part 2)

3298 Views | 4 Comments | 0 Articles | 7/25/2012 2:27:17 PM
In the last section, I argued that romantic love as it is understood in the West is alien to traditional Chinese thinking. Here, I will show what effect this has upon male-female relationships in contemporary China and what the implications are for those who want to date Chinese women. I will look broadly at two groups of women: older, more traditional women and the younger generation (ba ling hous and jiu ling hous). In both cases, it will turn out romantic love as it is understood in the West plays little role in the actual practice of relationships. Read more…

What's Love Got To Do with It? (Part 1)

I am pretty certain I am going to catch a lot of flak for this column, especially given the reaction to my last column, where I was only reporting the views of others. Here I am going to put out my own point of view, and I am sure (or at least hope) it is going to be controversial. I have no problem if you disagree with me. All I ask is for you to realize that what follows represents a deeply held conviction formed after living more than three years in China, dating numerous Chinese women, talking to and interviewing countless others, discussing the matter with friends, doing a good deal of reading and some hard thinking on the subject. So I’m pretty convinced of this claim and doubt that anything is going to come along to argue me out of it. But feel free to go ahead. Read more…

I have mentioned the weekly Sinica podcast at popup Chinese, where a panel of China experts are brought together each week to discuss issues in China. Recently, there was an absolutely amazing all-female panel discussing the role of women in contemporary China. It is a discussion you should listen to if you are interested in Chinese women (and if you are on this website, I will assume you are interested in Chinese women or hopelessly confused). Read more…

I have stated many times that it is important for anyone wishing to get into a long term relationship with a Chinese woman to keep up with contemporary events in China. Given the countless resources available online, it is remarkably easy to do. By contrast, neglecting to carry out this simple task can have negative consequences for your relationship possibilities with Chinese women and the quality of your experience in China. Read more…
