Chinese Women, Asian Women, Online Dating & Things Chinese and Asian
Gareth is an Australian who has lived in JiangSu, SuZhou (Heaven on Earth) for a few years - he is a keen observer of the Chinese people, Chinese culture and the changes that are occurring in China at break-neck speed. He can often be found on his a nightly 'perch' in front of his bar in the famous Bar Street in Suzhou, talking to the locals in his bad Mandarin, teaching the 'flower-selling girls' English, eating street food and smiling at the local chengguan (neighbourhood police). Gareth also has several other businesses in China around Business and English training. His experiences have been varied and interesting and his years in China have taught him to be wary of promises but excited about prospects, not a bad situation to be in!

The Old Man and the Turtle

One of the more interesting sights in China is when ’ancient' clashes with 'modern' and this happened to me today as I went for daily walk to work. Standing on the corner of the street was an elderly man holding a stick, tied to the end of this stick and dangling rather precariously in mid-air, was a very large turtle - a loop of string firmly around the shell front to back to ensure it's snake-like head (complete with vice-like jaws) was safely tucked into it's protective carapace! I-Ching, Fate's Role in Life

I was reading a translated copy of the I-Ching last week. What is the i-Ching (YiJing)? Well it is a famous book of ’thinking states’ of Tao scholars sometimes known as the 'Book of Changes’ - it's modern translations into English date from the 1700’s but it's history in China is much longer than that! (Warring Period. 400 BC, or Oracle Turtle Shell from 1000 BC). Together with FengShui (and a few other disciplines), it makes up some of the ’ancient wisdom’ still entrenched in Chinese culture and tradition.  Read more…

Mind your language

I read with interest a forum post about how Chinese women do not understand the 'English’ usage of the word “love” - how they couldn't understand the difference between ’loving football’, ’loving being your mates’ and ’loving your partner’. I have often noticed this difficulty when teaching Chinese people English - that there doesn't appear to be the same ’interest-like-love’ continuum! Read more…

What time is 'soon'!

I was reading the other day that one of the changes made on the London Underground that increased customer satisfaction the most was not adding more trains, or cleaning the stations, having more female toilets, increased security or having smoother transit through the stations or anything else like it, it was actually providing a countdown timer for when the next train would arrive! Chinese-made eyeglasses

When I first started traveling, my Grandfather gave me a few words of advice - when you go to a new place, always to put on a pair of that country’s eyeglasses! That puzzled me a bit, I can honestly say! But I took it as one of those pieces of information people give you without really knowing how it will be useful - like wearing clean underwear in case you get in an accident and need to go to hospital.
