One thing I have noticed on CLM website and in dating a few Chinese women in China in particular, many of us are focusing on the result - that is marriage! But I'm still wrestling with this idea - I’m trying to work out what kind of person would you have to be to be successful in life-long inter-cultural marriage!

My little city is becoming famous for it's building known affectionately as “The Big Pants”. Recently featured on a BBC news program about the excesses of unabated China’s Construction miracle - it's real name is the Orient Gateway but from any direction it is like a big pair of legs and a lower torso - like a giant robot part left over from an epic Atom Boy battle!

One of interesting interactions that goes on in relationships that I grapple with the most is the idea of closeness and distance. I am of the opinion that you can be close and distant at the same time - and that these 'boundaries' move constantly and maybe at different speeds for different parts of my psyche. and for different people.

I've been contemplating some big issues lately - must be the warmer weather and all the sweet young ladies in summer fashion! Seriously though, I have been working on the ideas of the differences between how Chinese might view love and desire compared to myself. More specifically, When you love, how does it feel? When we desire, how is it different from love?

I read a few months ago in some comments on a website about someone describing their expat lifestyle and the ’stages of understanding’ that people go through in the adjustment to another culture. I found it interesting because, of course, as someone who has lived in China for quite a while, I have experienced all of them too! And if you are seriously going to try to make a life with an overseas partner , you will probably experience them yourself or indirectly force your partner into them by virtue of relocation into a foreign clime!

A few people on CLM and other places accuse me of being marriage negative - and I can see their point of view as being valid! They say things like ’there are many good ladies around you, what is wrong with you not wanting to marry one of those?’. Or ’you seem to write like you are playing with the emotions of others, and don't really seem to be serious about any of them!’, or even that I am some vicarious eunuch voyeur intent on extinguishing the love in others...And, that may well be true (from your perspective, although I don't agree), if the end-game is indeed marriage!

When I was a kid, a long time before all the health-food fear meant that eating anything that came from animals would not block your arteries in 5 seconds, I grew up with ’dripping’! For those of you not accustomed to this delicacy, let me highlight it’s origins and taste - essentially it is the juices, fats and tasty meat morsels that comes from roasted meats - and since my grandmother would insist on a weekly Sunday Roast, we had a bountiful supply.

I went out last evening and caught up with a long-time Chinese friend. We somehow got into that inevitable discussion that occurs when the weather gets a little colder and the frost appears on the ground...
