Gareth is an Australian who has lived in JiangSu, SuZhou (Heaven on Earth) for a few years - he is a keen observer of the Chinese people, Chinese culture and the changes that are occurring in China at break-neck speed. He can often be found on his a nightly 'perch' in front of his bar in the famous Bar Street in Suzhou, talking to the locals in his bad Mandarin, teaching the 'flower-selling girls' English, eating street food and smiling at the local chengguan (neighbourhood police). Gareth also has several other businesses in China around Business and English training. His experiences have been varied and interesting and his years in China have taught him to be wary of promises but excited about prospects, not a bad situation to be in!

Perils of China - instant Banquets

2898 Views | 6 Comments | 3 Articles | 1/2/2014 5:34:42 PM

If there is one thing that almost every Chinese person loves and that is a banquet! The chance to get their mouth around foods that they might not necessarily eat at home is quite a sweet deal and people will travel hours for the possibility, sometimes not eating anything from the day before, just to get their fill - and, if it comes on the dime of someone else the taste is even sweeter. What Chinese Women (probably) do wrong when dating foreign men! 中国女性跟外国人谈恋爱时易犯的错误

8655 Views | 23 Comments | 0 Articles | 12/30/2013 2:30:44 PM

I've decided to put my thoughts together on this based on my observations and feelings in relationships in China. I will not say I am an expert by any standard - these are just my personal observations and ’fears’ and ’annoyances’ when dating Chinese ladies in China. If you are a lady reading this and identify some of the traits in this, consider if you might need to modify some actions to appear less so! If you are a male looking to date Chinese ladies, be ready for the emotions and situations and accept it is ’normal’ in China.  Read more…

HongQiao Railway Station

2843 Views | 10 Comments | 1 Articles | 12/13/2013 10:22:32 AM

I am sitting in Hongqiao railway station, just on the edge of Shanghai, waiting to catch the fast train back to my home in SuZhou. I have spent the morning getting my mother onto a plane to go back to my sister's home in HongKong. She has been visiting me for a few weeks and we spent quite a bit of time enjoying the waning warmth of the autumn sun while exploring the gardens, temples and old water villages in this area. It was good being non-tourists - we went to a lot of 'local places' rather than the popular 'tourist traps' and I was able to exploit a few relationships to get extra-fine silk, high quality embroidery and tour the factories and workrooms where it was being made. As well as climbing a few mountains and walking around a few lakes and rivers. Read more…

2969 Views | 7 Comments | 0 Articles | 9/19/2013 5:09:24 PM
One of the most difficult things about China is just when you think you have had enough of it's obnoxiousness and inconsistencies, it somehow sucks you back in with it's sheer potential - the next big idea. Read more…

Why I can't visit ShenZhen anymore!

I read a small article on one of the Chinese news sites that was talking about a rule that has recently passed in Shenzhen that requires men using public restrooms to take better aim. Apparently, the local government is tired of cleaning splash back, drips and other oddities from around public urinals and will fine any perpetrators RMB100 for being a little off-aim. Read more…

Perils of China: Beating the Heat

2911 Views | 1 Comments | 0 Articles | 8/27/2013 6:31:48 AM
Summertime brings heat and heat brings millions of Chinese people to look for alternatives to cooling the body. I have alluded to this trend before by speaking about the Beijing TaxiDriver Coolness Technique of rolling up one leg of the trousers to give differential heat to each leg (exactly how a modern refridgerator works, by the way) but a recent trip to a local swimming pool reminded me of these ’adaptations with Chinese Characteristics’ so I thought I would share them with you as example of ’Chinese coolness’. Perils of China: Medical Attention

2989 Views | 3 Comments | 0 Articles | 8/25/2013 3:49:07 PM
I was talking to my sister on VOIP the other day (she has lived in Hong Kong for 6 years) and I commented that I was feeling a bit of a headache coming on! She shot me back the only medical advice that you seem to get in China with any certainty, “drink more water, take more rest!”. You can be guaranteed that any ailment you may suffer from with have the first point of cure being those two things! Read more…

Perils of China: The Feral Foreigner

2762 Views | 2 Comments | 0 Articles | 7/3/2013 5:19:32 PM
I am sure you have seen this before - that poor deranged foreigner in some location in Asia that has taken on just a little too much local colour (or maybe too much sun, or some other chemical stimulant) and has started to look like a parody! Read more…

Chivalry ain't dead!

5736 Views | 13 Comments | 0 Articles | 6/23/2013 1:12:20 PM
One of the funniest (at the time) Chinese dating techniques I first heard when when I came to China a decade ago was, if you were dating a Chinese woman, place some food onto her plate with your chopsticks. Essentially offering to serve her was a great way to get her interested in you - and was a way of showing your affection for her based on the idea that you were actually showing a willingness to acknowledge her and a commitment to care for her!
