Barry from Australia is a questioning soul who looks at social issues from an alternative point of view and instead of asking, “Why?”, he asks “Why not?” He’s convinced that many of his previous incarnations were spent in China. He feels drawn to the people there; attracted by their rich culture and way of life. If given one wish from God, he’d reply, “I want everyone on Earth to be the same colour, speak the same language, and treat each other as they themselves would like to be treated.”

My China Trip - Day 18 - Part 2 我的中国之行—第18天-第二部分

By late afternoon in the glorious Jiuzhougou Valley, Tina and I were almost by ourselves – and still moving downwards at a good clip.  All the casual sightseers had disappeared.  Great stuff!  We had the walkways almost to ourselves. Up to around lunchtime they'd been somewhat bustling, but as the afternoon dissipated, so did the crowds. After hiking up Mt Emei previously and doing plenty of two and three hour daily hikes since then, Tina and I were in peak physical condition.  The long miles we walked were a breeze, it wasn’t until after about ten hours that either of us started feeling a bit enervated. My China Trip - Day 19 - Part 2 我的中国之行---第19天第1部分

One disadvantage of a tour group was that at times, they moved a touch too quickly.  As I was accompanying my small group, I often felt like stopping for a while, breathing in the magnificence of the area, absorbing more of its revitalizing atmosphere – yet because it was continually moving,  I had to keep pace with them.  A couple of times I slowed down to admire something, becoming completely left behind - but then I'd be shouted at in Chinese, something along the lines of  "Hey, Mr Round Eyes - please keep up!" Tina woke me at 6.30am.  I was still weary from the big eleven hour hike we’d done the day before.  Dog tired, if the truth be known. Read more…

The crashing of doors startled me awake.  I glanced at my watch – it was just after 3.00am. “Damn!”, I cursed to myself, “Inconsiderate people!” Read more…

Western men have bigger penises than Chinese men” giggled Tina. Why Tina would blurt out such a statement is beyond me.  We were having an early meal at a sidewalk café near the bus transit centre in Chengdu, ready to catch the tourist coach to Jiuzhaigou Valley, one of China’s most beautifully scenic areas. Day 16 dawned.  Damn, these days were going fast.  Einstein was wrong  - time in fact wasn't moving ahead uniformly - it was inexorably accelerating! Read more…

My China Trip - Day 15 我的中国之行—第15天

Awaking in the Jinyi Hotel as usual this morning, it was hard to believe I was up to day 15 already. Things had to be done.  Discussions needed to be had. Decisions needed to be made.  Time waited for no one, especially a somewhat unsettled Westerner in a strange land, waking up in a strange bed, in a strange place surrounded by strange people. I awoke late this morning, around 8.30am.  As usual, I was alone in my hotel room, having caught a cab back here late last night from Tina's place.  I’d noticed that some nights I was able to sleep well, yet other times like last night, I had difficulty dropping off, even though feeling dog tired. My China Trip - Day 13 我的中国之行—第13天

It was 7.30am, my usual time to get up.  I was still sleeping alone in the QinLi hotel in Shawan each evening.  Tina and her daughter Wendy were located fifteen or twenty minutes walk away.  By all appearances, I was leading a perfectly respectable life -  the gossip merchants in Tina’s apartment block had no cause to talk too much about either her or me.  A single Chinese woman would tend to be frowned upon, if it was noticed a man staying with her overnight.  “Saving face” is an important concept in China.
