I sincerely meant to get off that path to self-destruction.  But a chance at happiness appeared unexpectedly; at least, at that time, I sincerely believed that was what it was.  In some ways, I was manipulated into what turned out to be a messed up situation; but I wasn’t completely blameless.  Nobody held a gun to my head.  There were warning signs, but I wanted so badly to believe that I could finally have the happiness I yearned for, so I ignored them. Love and Loss

Last February 28th was my grandmother’s first birthday after she passed away.  Many times before, I would take the lead in making preparations for her birthday celebration.  I would make sure everybody came – her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren – because I knew she was happiest when she saw her family together.  Family reunions were always a big deal to her because her children never got along; but like I have always said to those close to me, my grandmother was very lucky with the grandchildren she had.  We loved her dearly.  We more than made up for the shortcomings of her own children. Just like the first time, our rekindled connection abruptly ended.  There was no preamble.  There was no buildup to a satisfying end.  There were no fitting goodbyes.  In retrospect, the abruptness of it all was remarkably fitting to what was an unremarkable re-acquaintance.  I came upon another turning point in my life at that time; I really didn’t know how badly or well his life was going.  As all crossed paths were bound to go, ours continued in different directions, and so we simply went our separate ways. After sixteen years, the time and circumstances were finally right; they weren’t perfect, but they were right.  We were together again.  Third time’s the charm, they always say.  A year into our long-distance relationship, he was finally able to visit me from the U.S.  Seventeen months later, that long-distance relationship came to an abrupt end. An Unexpected, But Much Longed-For, Reunion

Even “the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry,” as the saying goes.  I was ready to wait two, maybe three, more years; but my fiancé got himself in a very tight bind, instead.  For two-and-a-half months, I was not sure what was going to happen to us. Read more…

Chinese Dating Prospects in Hong Kong for Foreign Men

5716 Views | 5 Comments | 0 Articles | 9/3/2013 4:26:21 PM
Foreign men looking for a certain type of Chinese woman – one who is more westernized than traditionally Chinese, to be more specific – may feel that he will have better Chinese dating prospects in Hong Kong than in the mainland. Definitely, women in Hong Kong have more westernized attitudes, especially when it comes to dating and relationships. It is this fact, however, that may also make it harder for a foreign man to find his ideal Chinese girlfriend among Hong Kong women. Read more…

When A Mask Gets in the Way of Chinese Dating

2827 Views | 1 Comments | 0 Articles | 8/21/2013 6:00:44 PM
Your plans for a romantic lunch date with your special Chinese lady can be easily ruined by the untimely announcement that atmospheric particular matter levels are high enough to require the wearing of face masks and/or staying indoors. Indeed, air pollution in China’s most urbanized areas can get so bad that residents are regularly kept up to date on particulate matter levels so they know when the air is safe or unsafe to breathe in directly. Wear-a-mask days can definitely get in the way of Chinese dating, in more ways than one! Read more…

White Skin Fixation

Owning my actions is part of my code of ethics; if I’m gonna do something, I’ll claim it and take responsibility for it. It’s a very effective system of keeping myself in check; before I do anything, I think about whether or not it’s something I would be ashamed of claiming as my own later on. It has also proven to be a very effective test of the rightness of any decision I make. With that being said, I would have to admit that I “suffer” from the white skin fixation that is widespread among East Asians. I recognize that it is shallow and it can be unhealthy; some people will understand, others will judge. So be it! Read more…

Admittedly, Filipino food culture is not as distinguished and diverse as Chinese food culture, nor is it as lavishly abundant as American food culture. But the tendency for any food culture to become unhealthy is the great equalizer. Read more…

America, You Have Serious Diet Issues, Too

4158 Views | 14 Comments | 0 Articles | 6/29/2013 3:28:01 PM
But Americans already know that. The whole world knows it. As a serious public health issue, the American diet has been talked about countless times everywhere, by health experts, the media, and the public all over the world. The great U.S of A acknowledges the problem; obese Americans acknowledge the problem; diabetic Americans acknowledge the problem. You get the point. Americans get the point, too, but the problem persists. Read more…
