A retired Aussie programmer from Sydney, I am an ardent traveller, student of things Chinese, and in retirement both an online teacher and online MOOC student. I write mostly about travel and experiences in China, and of interaction with Asian culture and people. Don’t expect controversy because, like a cat in a puddle, I tread carefully - but sometimes I just might throw in a ‘googly’!

In the Dynasty song, the kids pronounce sui as swee, not as sway!

Sorry about the youtubes for those of you in China without a VPN!

This song in French and English I learnt almost 70 years ago.  At school we sang it in the round, in choir.  Either in French or English.  Then about 25 years ago when I came across the Chinese version, I laughed of course, because the Chinese I knew all claimed it as a genuine Chinese song from many years ago.

Then lo and behold, whilst studying Chinese History online via Duke University, I cam across the Dynasty son - a means of remembering the order of the Chinese dynasties

The English Version

Frère Jacques

Frère Jacques

Dormez-vous?

Dormez-vous?

Sonnez les matines

Sonnez les matines

Ding, ding, dong

Ding, ding, dong

Tang xizong is the 'dude', 'jiahuo'  in the golden robes - around 880, he didn't do a lot, presided over drought famine and rebellion, and preceded the end of the dynasty by about 20 years, inauspicious but imposing enough in the golden klobber.
