Soul Mates

“According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves.” – Plato

Those who have found their other half know what it means to finally feel complete. Those who are still searching for theirs know what it means to have a gaping hole in their life. We all have our own ideas of who the right person is for us – the ideal man/woman; The One; our soul mate. Some people say when you meet that person, you just know. There are no doubts in your head and heart. You just know. The unfortunate ones realize, too late, that they have found that person after they have lost them.

Physical characteristics and quantifiable attributes aside, who is the right person for you? Someone that motivates you to be a better version of yourself. Someone that makes you feel you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Someone you can trust to stand by you through the worst of times and accept you even when you’re at your worst. Someone that makes you not want to give up when the going gets tough. Someone whose thoughts and feelings you value more than anyone else’s. Everybody deserves this kind of someone.

Even if you don’t believe in soul mates, you’re here because you believe in true love. The kind of love that inspires you and excites you; that scares you and comforts you; that lifts you up and also brings you home.

I hope all of you will find this kind of love someday.

Here’s a love poem, written by famous poet E. E. Cummings, which I’d like to share with all of you this Valentine’s Day.

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond

any experience, your eyes have their silence:

in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,

or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me

though i have closed myself as fingers,

you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens

(touching skilfully, mysteriously) her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and

my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,

as when the heart of this flower imagines

the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals

the power of your intense fragility: whose texture

compels me with the color of its countries,

rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes

and opens; only something in me understands

the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)

nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

Thanks for the nice words, Achelle. They were lovely.

Yet I must be honest and say that the poem was not to my liking. I reckon I could write a nicer love poem than this one. I found it to be somewhat stilted and way too self-indulgent and abstract for my liking, no disrespect to Mr Cummins intended. (giggle)

Thanks. I needed that.

Achelle, it is great to read another of your wonderful blogs, it has been far too long since your last entry. I believe in soul mates as well, I do agree that we may well realize they are the one after it is too late. I do like the poem as I am an old romantic fool who still believes in true and real love. Heck I still cry watching romantic love story movies lol (clap) bring on "The Notebook"!!

I sense a bit of sorrow or sadness in your words. I hope all is well for you.

I have often wondered as to whether Chinese and Filipino women believe in the existence of a "soul mate". I also wonder how many of our sisters here will read this and actually voice their opinions? Show of hands please :)

Once again I feel you are the best writer to grace these pages....

Thank you for the lovely words. :) All is well with me. I always try to find something good in every day, even during bad days. I also hope you are doing well.

I can speak for most Filipino women and say that we do believe in soul mates. Filipinos are also romantics at heart.

"Perhaps you'll like this more?"

Yes, for a simple person such as myself, with its nicely whimsical rhyme and gentlely flowing syntax, this poem was way better than the other one, thank you, Achelle! :)

Maybe we are fooled by these Greek mythology and fairy tales, but I really like them, even I know it is not real, I enjoy these beautiful and interesting stories.

I like your subtle and accurate language, but I don't appreciate most of your opinions.

Once I listened to Allan Watt's lectures and he mentioned that we get lost and then try to find oneself again. This is like a game of hide and seek.
I have a feeling in me that there is someone .. me and someone .. we are always together although we cannot see each other.
It seems the time is near for me to meet my soul mate.
We are often distracted by material .. I include here physical too aspects of life but apart from that there is also the aspect that has been so well described by Achelle.
I think it stands to reason that there must be some kind of soul mates as there are millions of people and billions of options for everyone and it is virtually impossible to do all . One has to choose. One wants to feel good and improve.
If we can do that together with someone who is so much special to us then we subconsciously and consciously as well strive to find the missing part of ourselves.
I wish every one to be happy.
