Thank you for your bathroom story. I remember a similar problem for an American in Australia 40 years ago. Back then it was not uncommon for the toilet to be outside the house and only a bathroom(without a toilet) inside the house. Your story about "What does '方便' mean?" was interesting to me because I started a serious attempt at learning Mandarin 8 weeks ago after reading an ebook called "Fluent in 3 months". I can recongnize over 300 Chinese characters now and I know enough to understand why Google Translate struggles to be more than 80% acurate. I think a list of language misunderstandings would be well suited to the magazine section of CLM.
