I spent 20 years punching a time clock... then decided there had to be another way. Right now I'm sitting in a comfortable chair on a beautiful beach. There's a sweet, soft breeze in the air. In front of me, on the clear blue water, a boat drifts by. Maybe I'll go snorkeling this afternoon, or work on my tan. This is my kind of tropical paradise... cheap and unspoiled!

Monkey! Ocean! Part 2!

As you may recall, I was wandering the dirt paths of coastal Moalboal, Philippines, in search of a snorkel tour boat. None to be found… And then… a welcome voice…

“You know my assistants. Grag the robot, Otho the android, and Simon Wright, the Living Brain. We came from the moon full speed when I saw your signal. What’s wrong?”

No, wait. That was in a Bangkok bar, hanging with S.J. In Moalboal, the voice was Italian and said, “Hey, I hear you are looking for a way to go snorkeling, but there are no boats available.” The fellow from last night’s tree-bar, and unless I missed my guess he was with the same monkey.

The magic unfolded pretty quickly. My benefactor spent summers in Italy, winters in the Philippines. He was obviously pretty wealthy. He wasn’t using his private boat the next day, so I was welcome to it. He’d let the captain know. I only needed to pay for the diesel fuel.

It was a mighty fine next day. I showed up at the dock, gear in hand. The genial two man crew welcomed me on board. Next stop… outlying Pescador Island.

You know what real snorkeling is like? Great snorkeling is like floating through forest treetops at the height of autumn; and everywhere leaves of every combination of colors are falling and clustering and speeding by in the wind all about you. Hell, it’s like whole autumn forests are swimming with you. The trees and leaves are schools and colors of fish, and that is the kind of snorkeling to be found around Pescador Isaland.

I did two tours in the water, in between sunning myself on the teakwood deck. I must have seen thousands of fish going about their business. Every color was swimming under the water, and then some. One of the many cool things about the underwater world is the abundance and quantity of wildlife. Schools of tropical fish have more members than any flock of birds you’ve ever seen. Fish of all shapes, colors, and size are everywhere!

Afterwards we sailed back under still sunny skies. I gave the captain $20 for fuel; it seemed by his smile to be enough.

That night, after finding my Italian benefactor and thanking him - he was pleased and promptly dropped the subject – I went back to the tree bar for a celebratory beer. There was an American couple I had noticed days earlier. How could I not? She was young, gorgeously formed, and I’d swear no higher than three feet tall. Both she and her boyfriend were 20 years old. If she was a dwarf, she was a magnificent dwarf.

I told them my happy story. Fascinated by her, I offered to buy them both a (cheap) supper. No thanks, she said; explaining that they had just feasted on grilled fish provided by a Filipino family. In exchange, she said, for the adults of the family having been allowed to watch the young couple making love.

Whoa. Maybe I hadn’t cornered the market in good things.

Maybe Moalboal is a magic place, where everybody gets what they want?

I wonder how that monkey knows.
