"Songs are language flowers." - Luo Ta-Yu

" Songs are language flowers." - Luo Ta-Yu

It is very difficult to explain the rush of dazzling energy when music melts with my soul. Music bonds precious moments and memories, creating time capsules for our feelings as the songs of legendary Taiwanese pop singer Lo Ta-yu do for me – bringing back the warm passion and fire of youth whenever I hear them now.

Lo Ta-yu, who rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s, is the father of Chinese pop music. He revolutionized Chinese pop and rock music with his melodic lyrics, his love songs, and his witty social and political commentary.

His music not only moved who grew up with hearing his songs, but also gained him many younger fans. His fingers drift over his piano keys quickly, floating out strings of beautiful musical notes and his voice is a familiar breath coming from a vast wilderness. His lonely cry on a long heartfelt journey seems to take us back to a world of young dreams.

“Give me a ladle of Chang Jiang water, that alcoholic Chang Jiang drink is homesickness… Give me the hand of Haitang Hong, that hot blood is homesickness…” This is an early work of Lo Ta-yu’s, he set Yu Guang Zhong’s poem “Four Homesickness rhymes” to music in 1984. The poem is song in chorus with sighs, full of pleasing charm, with a little melancholic melody and simple instrumentation. If you hear it only once, you will never forget it.

Homesickness is extremely sensitive emotion for Taiwan Chinese. Lo Ta-yu choose the poem at the start of his career that reflected his social and political sense, and established the basic tone for the style of his later works. At that time, Lo Ta-yu was very easy and natural. Despite initially wanting to be a doctor, perhaps he had not yet fully chosen music as his career.

“Love is the thing that nobody can understand, love is an eternal melody; Love makes tears of laughter drift slowly, love was you and me …”

Lo Ta-yu wrote many songs for other singers and this “Maxim of Love” was also sung by many famous singers, but after hearing him sing it, you realize other singers overdid it.

Love can feel distressed, painful, but also happy. Only Lo Ta-yu can reflect the philosophy and devotion of love, which the song expresses. His singing can dispel the confusion of love, calm its anxiety, and drain all disturbances from the air.

“You and me have struggled long for our dreams. We cried together, also dreamed together. I hope you remember, remember forever, our own shining days…” In my heart, Lo Ta-yu is not only a musician and singer, he also writes magical poetry and is a great thinker who can shake our souls. He is an emotional genius. It springs from a deep heart bringing the feeling of youth with lightning speed.

“Running water takes out stories of time which change us…” Lo Ta-yu always dresses in black and wears dark sunglasses and for 30 years he’s been singing stories of time. Time is such a strange thing. Thirty years seems like yesterday and when he sings we return to a younger time, as if we had never grown older. The power of his singing has seeped into our marrow forever.

When we listen to Lo Ta-yu’s songs again today, one thinks we could feel some helplessness as the years increased and that youth will never come again. But we can’t move from the power of his deep poetic emotions.

Good music remains more firmly in the mind than good poetry. If a good poem is a fine wine, good music is the pure air around us, the sounds of nature soaking our bodies and mind, and the touching melody that lingers in our hearts forever.

“The great partners are difficult to find in peoples lives again and life is hard to give up with a blue sky overhead …”
