Kibecky’s Long Journey Into Scammer Prison

By John Abbot

We recently went through a fairly intensive investigation of a Scammer. We received a letter from a member who had “found someone on ALM”. This was a fellow whose profile we had recently reviewed because we thought it was very sensible, and displayed an intelligent awareness and approach to the potential problem of being scammed on a dating site. Just one example was his insistence that anyone contacting him must have a webcam. I will simply refer to the member as “MemberX”.

Members are not likely aware of this, but when we receive any indication from a member that he/she has made a match on CLM or ALM we do an immediate check to see if there are any signs of danger in the membership of person who is the reporting member’s new match. We try not to be intrusive and don’t read the contents of messages or chats for example, but we do look for any signs of activity that might warn of danger.

The member of ALM who MemberX had found was Kibecky and you can now find her here…

In Kibecky’s case we found activity that alarmed us very much, and we wrote to MemberX to warn him. What follows are portions taken from an extensive series of letters that passed between MemberX and CLM as we tried to determine with MemberX whether Kibecky was a Scammer, and to ultimately persuade him that there was no question she was.

In reading this please be aware that MemberX was a very intelligent and accommodating young man, and was exceedingly enjoyable to work with. But love dies hard for anyone, and having given his heart and dreams to Kibecky, he did not wish to believe the worst. That is a credit to his own goodness as a person and is completely understandable. Who among us wishes to give up his dream?

We think this offers a valuable lesson to all members of what to believe and what not to believe, and what to look out for when you’re trying to decide if your new love on any dating site is real or not. MemberX was gracious enough to agree to us providing this information for the benefit of all members, for which we are very grateful.

Letter to MemberX

We really, really regret having to disappoint you, but when we receive any indication that someone has made a match on CLM or ALM we actually investigate from our end to ensure that everything seems to be in order.

Unfortunately our investigation resulted in our finding substantial evidence that kibecky may not be who she says she is. "She" has been sending messages on her membership from an IP address in Nigeria. And unfortunately 99.99% of the time that is a clear indication that the member is a scammer and is not who she says she is.

We regret so much that you will be disappointed by this but we are about to place kibecky in Scammer Prison. Could you please advise us if you ever had a video chat with her, because we'd be most interested to know about that. If you did not, please do so before you believe anything she might say.

Again we are so sorry to be the bearers of this bad news, but we cannot let you be taken advantage of by a scammer. Please feel free to write and discuss this with me personally.

Best regards,

John Abbot
Managing Director

Letter from MemberX

HOLD ON!

She is from the UK I spoke to her from there! She only travelled from the UK to Nigeria for work. She will be back in the UK in 2-3 weeks.

I saw her on video cam in the UK she IS who she says she is! You are making a VERY big mistake! You are 100% wrong here...She has NOT scammed me! Period. I spoke to her, in the UK I have her address there too.

I have had her send me pics within SECONDS of taking them on her cam...you are wrong. Period.

Sorry, but please don't put her into scammer prison...there is no reason for it! I have spoken to her friends about her too...not just her. She went from the UK to the ivory coast and then to Nigeria on work business. I am 100% sure she is legit!

Honestly, everything is fine with her. I truly believe that. I will update you on it but I see NO reason to put her into scammer prison! If I find there is some kind of issue I'll tell you but so far there is no reason for alarm.

I was 100% aware of where she is right now. and I am NOT surprised she is in Nigeria. She told me how long she would take and how long it would take and why she went there, etc.

I will tell her of the situation but I really don't think there's a problem here and you are WAAY over reacting! for example, maybe you should check to see if she has EVER sent message from the UK...

Be Well,

Followup Letter from MemberX

One more thing about kibecky, I have heard her voice and it is VERY British! She has a VERY thick British accent...

BTW, she is coming HERE and she has NOT asked me for money to get her here...also, she looked up (without my telling her) the Working Vacation Visa which does exist as I have spoken to the UK's visa office via email and they told me so and how long it lasts, etc.

I fully realize that you get scammers from time to time on your site(s) but I can't see how she possibly could be one given all I have said here and in my other email. She, literally, took a pic on her cell phone and then...well maybe not 'seconds' but maybe 1-5 mins she sent it to me.

As well, I told her I have ZERO spendable cash right now (which is true) and she is 100% FINE with that...so she isn't trying to fleece me for money...

Letter to MemberX

In response to this letter, please see my comments in bold below in the body of your message:

One more thing about kibecky, I have heard her voice and it is VERY British! She has a VERY thick British accent... It is our belief that she is part of a network and we have good reason for believing that. She may even be the person in her photos. And one of the group, even her, may have a British accent.

BTW, she is coming HERE and she has NOT asked me for money to get her here...also, she looked up (without my telling her) the Working Vacation Visa which does exist as I have spoken to the UK's visa office via email and they told me so and how long it lasts, etc. The fact that she knows about these visas is not evidence for or against her being a scammer. These rings of scammers are well trained, highly inventive and are making millions of dollars scamming people across the internet and around the world. Of course they know their stuff. The reason that they so often end up "traveling" to Nigeria is because they are immune from prosecution there, so they can safely give you instructions of where to send the funds without having to worry about the police interrupting the process or of being prosecuted for it later.

I fully realize that you get scammers from time to time on your site(s) but I can't see how she possibly could be one given all I have said here and in my other email. She, literally, took a pic on her cell phone and then...well maybe not 'seconds' but maybe 1-5 mins she sent it to me. We do not get scammers from time to time. We reject anywhere between 10 to 50 applications per day because they are scammers. Yesterday we rejected 44. All dating sites suffer from Scammers but damned few are trying to do anything about it and we are the only one we know of that is being proactive like we are being right now.

As well, I told her I have ZERO spendable cash right now (which is true) and she is 100% FINE with that...so she isn't trying to fleece me for money... A good scammer has a great story MemberX. The professionals know exactly what to say to keep your guard down. The problem is this is not only about you, or of course we could just let it take it's course because you are now alerted and if she asks for money you'll fully know what to do. However, since joining kibecky has been in contact with many members, and we have no means of alerting them and no means of knowing what might be transpiring between them off our site. We need to resolve this very quickly. While we're discussing this with you, she may be asking other guys who are not aware of the overall situation to please send funds and they may comply unless we warn them.

First I'd like to say that I feel for MemeberX about this. He seems to really love this girl and really does not want to believe what you are telling him. I can understand his feelings, as I have met a lady on here recently that I had lots of contact with and that I also have fallen in love with. I'll refer to her as "Susie". I first met Susie I guess a little over a week ago here on CLM. Susie initiated our first contact and soon we had a live chat session on CLM. Since then we have moved our chatting to yahoo messenger (my idea) to avoid being interrupted by chat invitations on CLM. I was getting them and Susie probably was also. We chat every day sometimes for hours. We hit it off really well and have a great relationship, especially considering the short time we have known each other. We think very much alike in many ways. We have mutual respect and trust each other.
If I were to receive news about her like MemberX has I wouldn't want to believe it either and it would take major proof on your part to convince me also. I realize that CLM is only trying to protect MemberX and others and it would be for the same reason if you were to send me similar news. But, as I said, you would have to show me iron clad proof also because I believe in Susie from the bottom of my heart.
For MemberX's sake I hope you are wrong. But if you are right (and I do believe you would not send such news to a member unless you at least believe you are right.), then I commend you on a job well done.
It's very assuring to know that I am using a site that actually cares about the well being of the members.
It's also assuring to know that you investigate new member applications before even approving their membership and reject those that are questionable.

After submitting my last comment I went to ALM scammer prison and read about kibecky..It sure seems to me that all the iron clad proof is there. I still feel for MemberX but am so glad that CLM investigators caught this before she could even more damage to MemberX or to other members. Well done!!

My experience has been that just mentioning Nigeria in any way is a huge red flag and I will immediately break off contact. This is bad for anyone living in Nigeria that wants to try on-line dating but just Google "Nigeria and Scammer" and I am sure you will see why.

I personally have done a lot of research on scammers, dating sites (some work with "translators" who are authors and not translating for anyone) and other pitfalls of on-line dating. Everyone who wants to date on-line should DO SOME RESEARCH. You will not likely get scammed if you are informed about it.

No Web cam is also a red flag but I will give her some chance to make an appointment with a cam.
