International Dating: My Story - Western Men and Thai Women

Matching Western Men and Asian Women.

Noi means “little one” in Thai. Noi and I had been chatting for nearly two months before I flew to Thailand to start the beginnings of my new life. She definitely appeared to be the “little one.” In the weeks before I flew to Thailand for the first time I kept going back to her profile on the Asian dating site. It was a site that specialized in matching western men with Thai women. I kept gazing at her kind smile and reading her bio. At 5’1” she was one whole inch smaller than my mother, and my Mom was tiny! My mother would often look at my 6’1” adult frame and comment along the lines of “how the hell did I give birth to you!”

I must have read Noi’s bio details twenty or more times before I met her. I was wary and had heard all the tales of misery about guys who had been scammed by Thai ladies. Her bio told me that Noi was employed as a hotel receptionist in Phuket; she was thirty-three years old and single with no kids. I learned that she liked beaches, steaks, red wine and had no desire to live outside of her native Thailand. It all sounded fine by me. It added that she was from the Khampaeng Phet region so I started googling all about that area. I was excited and constantly returned to gaze longingly at that sweet angelic smile. Even though I had planned my first trip on a month long tourist visa, I also investigated the other types of long-term visas and discovered that there was no need to apply to the Thai Embassy in London as there was a Consulate in Hull that could do everything by mail. It was looking good!

Things were looking better still as our email conversation was both regular and also exciting. Her English was pretty good. That made me a little cautious as I had read that many Thai women who spoke reasonable English were working as bar girls. [I have great difficulty calling them hookers or prostitutes and I will later explain why] Their work ensured that English was the lingua franca no matter which country the client came from. So, I queried that with Noi. I was content with her answer that she watched many TV programs particularly the celebrity chefs! I told her more about me and she reciprocated. I started to believe that I knew her. Her interest in cooking programs was not limited to a desire to learn English. She told me she had once owned a restaurant in her hometown but it had closed down when she moved to Phuket. We chatted endlessly by email and exchanged more and more photographs. It was the beginnings of a long distance relationship.

Noi sent me a batch of three or four photos featuring a little girl. I asked who it was and she told me it was her niece, Kamon. Noi explained that she was extremely fond of her niece and had looked after her back in her hometown. I was told that her mother, Noi’s sister, had abandoned her baby daughter soon after the birth as she had a drug and alcohol problem and was unable or unwilling to take care of her baby. I asked who was taking care of the child now. “My father” she replied, explaining that her own mother had died some years back. I volunteered that if things worked out for us then Kamon could come and live with us. Noi was overjoyed at that prospect.

I was overjoyed at the prospect of meeting Noi for the first time. We had finalized all the arrangements once I had told her of my flight details. We arranged to meet at Phuket airport. I had purchased a SIM card for use in Thailand and loaded it with credit ready to use as soon as I landed in Bangkok. There, I would have a short lay over before I caught the one-and-a-half-hour flight to Phuket. I opted to stay with Thai Airways to avoid a cross city trip to Don Mueang airport where I could have got a cheaper flight. No, I wanted to be with Noi, ASAP! There was another good reason to connect at Suvarnabhumi and that was arriving in BKK at six in the morning following a thirteen-hour flight. I had no desire to add another two or three hours in crossing BKK by taxi in a “wasted” state of jetlag. After all, I wanted to appear as fresh as possible when I met Noi at Phuket.

The flight from London Heathrow to Suvarnabhumi was excellent. I enjoyed the food, Thai of course, and had a pleasant English guy sat next to me on the flight. He filled me with hope. He was married to a Thai lady and was extolling the virtues of a relationship with a Thai woman. I couldn’t wait! Usually I detest long haul flights. They are boring. This was different. I felt young again and alive, ready to put the past behind me for a brand new start.

My flight touched down ahead of schedule in Bangkok. My growing excitement was not diminished by an inability to see the Land of Smiles for the first time. A smog or haze enveloped the whole of the city making it impossible for me to see outside the airplane. Nor was it diminished by a lack of sleep. I was like a young spring lamb ready to frolic in the field! The jet taxied to the pier and I said my goodbyes to the fellow Englishman sat next to me. He bade me farewell and wished me luck. I didn’t need luck as I was on top of the world and high on anticipation. I waited for my bag at the carousel and transited to the domestic part of the airport passing through immigration on the way. The immigration officer hardly glanced at my British passport and entered the rubber stamp. I was good for one month.

On arriving in the domestic section I found the gate and saw I had two hours to wait for departure. I opened up my phone and changed the SIM card then dialed Noi’s number.

“Hello” an exotic sounding voice whispered, softly, gently. The voice of an angel.

Great writing and a great story Ryan. To some degree it reminds me of my first trip to China and my intended meeting with several ladies over two week. I had set it up to meet 4 of them in 4 different Chinese cities, but by the time I was actually coming to China I was pretty sure that number two was the charm, and that turned out to be right.

I met her in ShenZhen and was smitten on sight. I never went on to meet 3 and 4 but called and cancelled, feeling like a cad, but a happy cad. That happy meeting turned into a three year long relationship with disastrous (for me) results, and I have a sense of foreboding as I read your tale that it too will be a tale of woe. But I hope I'm wrong. As you've described it so far it is one of those "too good to be true" stories about a "too good to be true" woman, but a few things you've revealed earlier make it impossible to believe that Noi id your Cinderella.

I wish it was that easy, but have learned the hard way that it rarely is, Just the same I am looking forward to the next installment. Well done.

@JohnAbbot @anonymous14811 Thank you for the compliments. I am sure that all will understand if I don't comment on the way my story unfolds. I don't want to spoil the ending! :)

Great writing by I hate the cliffhanger.
The "tone" of the email gives me the feeling that a few unpleasant things are around the corner. Well... third episode next week, same time and same channel?

Well, considering that I have read the author's bio - I know how the story will end. However, the twists and turns of it will no doubt be interesting. Its all part of life.
