International Dating: My Story - Ace Up My Sleeve

Landfill trucks came and went for two weeks solid. They would drive past the vacant lot, now belonging to Noi, brake then reverse before tipping the load of landfill. This was repeated time after time until after a while a small bulldozer arrived and started to push and level the landfill material. That material seemed to be made up of sandstone rocks and shale. It came from a quarry about ten miles away. The lot was part of some old rice fields. They were sunken areas and still flooded with water in parts making proper landfill a necessity before construction could commence. Further back from the rice fields lay the inland lake, part salt and part fresh water. One happy consequence of the fleet of tipper trucks was they ate in Noi’s restaurant. I was paying for the landfill but at least Noi was getting some money back through increased takings in the restaurant.

The landfill work was now over. The construction boss, he called himself Thomas, paid a visit to the restaurant to give the once over on the state of the landfill. He pushed and prodded a long bamboo pole into the now flattened landfill in several places. Finally he gave his nod of approval and told us work could begin in three weeks after the landfill had settled. Three weeks later his team of construction workers arrived. They set up a temporary wooden shack at the front of the lot alongside the road in order to give them some shelter from the sun during breaks. It was always a curious sight to me, and no doubt to many foreigners, to see people like this who worked outdoors covering their faces with scarves and wearing hats of all descriptions. It didn’t take long to realize this is to act as protection from the sun.

Thomas returned to the restaurant about a week before his workers turned up. It was time for me to give him money to buy materials such as ordering cement, steel reinforcing bars and concrete building blocks or breeze block as we call it in the UK. That came to about five hundred thousand baht or £7,000. Remember cash is king, so I drove off to an ATM to withdraw the cash. This act alone made me concentrate on making an appointment to see a lawyer to protect my own position. I knew that this sum of money was only the start. There were tiles, paint, windows, doors, electrical fittings and conduits, plumbing pipes and faucets, wash basins, shower enclosures, roofing and rainwater goods all to be bought in the future.

Noi was as busy as ever in the restaurant. By now we had gone back to our usual routine of seeing each other in the evenings only. Occasionally there was a meeting with Thomas on site. Noi was always tired. Too tired for sex. The nosy neighbor still popped around to look at me, the farang in their midst and she always gave me a sexy little smile. I got tempted seeing I was not enjoying any sex life with Noi. She was no beauty but not ugly either. I think one of the things that put me off was her husband. He looked a mean tough guy. She always waited until he had gone off to work before she came around to see me. Always smiling at me with that knowing look on her face. I swear if she had found me alone she would have jumped on my bones!

The daily routine was broken from time to time with day trips usually combined with finding something needed by the construction workers. One trip was to Phattalung and a nearby natural park. Pee Ning came with us. We all had a picnic lunch there then Pee Ning had a seizure. It was a mild epileptic fit. I saw how alert Noi was to his problem and how gentle she was in caring for him until he recovered from the fit. It got me thinking. I thought about her staying at Mama’s unbeknown to me when I first returned to England. I thought she had been staying at the Kanchanaburi bungalow I was paying rent for. She never mentioned Mama and Songkhla to me until very late in the day. Where did she sleep at Mama’s? Mama and her two adult sons who lived with her. Did she share Pee Ning’s bed I thought.

As soon as those thoughts entered my head, I dismissed them, I was committed. I had already spent money on the house and was in too deep. I had reached a point of no return. Yet, I still had my ace up my sleeve. The legal agreement now took priority. It had to be signed and soon.

I made one final internet search and noted down the phone numbers of three law firms. I called each in turn but started with the two in Hat Yai as that city was the nearest in distance. I wasn’t impressed. Neither of the receptionists who took the call could speak English. I called the third firm in Phuket, some five hours drive away. They were excellent and spoke perfect English and knew exactly what I required. I made an appointment.

I was now more relaxed than ever having made the appointment with the Phuket law firm. I told Noi about the appointment at a party. It was held by Thomas at his substantial home near the beach on the Gulf of Thailand. To be accurate, it was held in a huge marquee in the grounds. His son was leaving home to become a Buddhist priest and as tradition dictates, he arranged a grand party. There was plenty of food and drink as well as live music. I told Noi of the appointment and she received the news with her usual smile. “Okay darling. We all go to Phuket and stay the night. You, me, Pee Ning and everybody. They no see Phuket."

That response relaxed me even more. There was no hint of any fishy business and Noi seemed to understand and going along with my plan.

You are doing a great job of completely baffling us with how this will all turn out. I say this in spite of the fact you've already told us that it isn't going to turn out well. This particular episode, and I say "episode" intentionally, has turned the whole story into what seems like a well crafted Thai soap opera. I mean that will all due respect. I could really see this being being developed into a very clever romantic movie or TV series.

At this point, as I am seeing it, my money is bet on Noi having been setting you up from start to finish, having been in a relationship with Pee Ning throughout, and having played you rather ruthlessly for her own financial gain. But I am not feeling 100% confident in that bet at all, more like a 60/40 wager. And that is attributable to a fine job you've done in crafting this series. I am looking forward to the conclusion with curious anticipation.

Considering the fact that any foreigner wishing to buy, (or own), land in Thailand needs to hide it behind a Limited Company, I'm not surprised at how nonchalant Noi seems to be. She's got you 'f*cked' and there's nothing you can do about it.

Noi and her family are nothing more than materialistic, money-grabbing scumbags who care NOTHING about you, or anyone else.

Thai women relate the word 'Love' to money; materialism; cars; houses; bank accounts; businesses, and don't give a f*ck about anything else.

'Sex' soon becomes a 'dirty-word', and you'll maybe get a 'two-fingered-hand-job' on your birthday......if you're lucky !

Of all South-East Asian women, Thai are the worst of the lot.

(Yes, that's stereotypical, and I/m not tarring them all with the same 'brush', but for the innocent amongst us, it's needless to say 'Stay away from Thai women!')

I tend to agree with John but I would go all in on the bet. All the signs point to it. Similar to what has happened to more than a few of my male relatives and friends. Western men need to be so very careful when getting into a relationship with an Asian woman, keep your eyes open, wits about you and your "johnson" in your pants until you are 100% sure they are honest, can be trusted and are very serious about you.

If you ended up having sex with the nosy neighbor I doubt you would be alive today to write these stories.

I think you made a mistake telling Noi about your appointment, you should have kept it private to yourself only. She is obviously a smart person.

You should listen to your inner voice telling you that things are not right, dismissing these warnings, going all in and hopng for the best is like walking on the freeway with your eyes closed hoping you wont get hit...

Please let me be wrong...

Waiting with bated breath for the next episode...
