How to Lose Weight and Keep It Off - GUARANTEED! Part 3

By Barry Pittman

We all live two lives. The second one starts when we at last fully realise that the first one has an absolute ending that isn't so far away after all. Only then do we both consciously as well as subconsciously commit to more comprehensively cherish each moment, more fulsomely embrace each opportunity, more so than ever before in this, our second life. One where grace, peace, tolerance and wisdom finally reign supreme over narcissism, aggression, impatience and immaturity. The arrogance and ignorance of youth dissipates as one gradually grows to understand that it's so much better to have lead a rich, meaningful life rather than die an abject, meaningless death.

Okay. This is all very interesting but what has this got to do with an article on weight? Plenty. You see, just as some people have a fear of death, some also have a fear of life. Focussing specifically upon body issues for the moment, some have difficulty in accepting the fact that they need help in the weight area. Even though deep down, they may regard themselves as being a bit of a  slob. Yet disappointingly, some prefer to ignore these issues, to disregard their slowly increasing girth. It's just an inevitable stage of life, right?

The answer to this is an emphatic no! Unless one has medical issues such as hyperthyroidism, there is absolutely no good reason why older folk should weigh significantly more than when they were young adults. Stupid reasons such as the increased desire to eat more appetising, albeit unhealthy food, or not exercising so much, or having creaky knees and arthritic joints, etc don't cut the mustard as far as I'm concerned. These are no more than convenient, self-defeating cop-outs. Most older, overweight people are lazy slobs with a million excuses who should know better! If this hurts your sensitive ears or paper thin skin, then good. Maybe all you plump people out there might then get off your fat asses and do something about it!

Only when recognition and acceptance of a problem occurs that sufficient motivation and grit to decisively act will take place. Part of this process for some might include being insulted by a rude dude like me writing an article about weight on a website dealing with meeting Chinese ladies, for Pete's sake! Where's the connection? You're here to hook up with a nice Chinese lady, not be berated about your weight, yes? Who does he think he is, anyway?

God - or whatever higher power you choose to believe in - works in mysterious, often unexpected ways. It's unimportant how or where the message is received. The main thing is that you act upon it, don't wimpishly shrug your shoulders like so many jellyfish invertebrates out there.

To view this all from another perspective, some people don't realize that they can’t lose what they never had, but that they could in fact lose a lot of what they do have, a whole lot of weight, if the need and the will to do this exists. Why squander or misuse, what's remaining of your second stage of life?

Sometimes as we age, a situation will keep repeating itself, until eventually it's understood that there's no shortcut, no easy way out. Those possessing true depth of character will sooner or later, summon the fortitude to gaze piercingly into the mirror, facing reality mano a mano with all its appalling harshness. Running the risk of then sinking to the depths. Crawling on their creaky knees amidst the squalor, the shame and the swarming regrets swirling around in their aching skull. Maybe not until then, will the courage and commitment to act upon what they frightfully see staring bleakly back at them finally become realised. Hallelujah for that!

Much more could be said about the growth, sometimes even the explosion, of wisdom within us all as we age, but right now I'm talking specifically about dieting and weight control. Eliminating the unhealthy triglycerides bubbling and erupting below your skin. Changing your life habits. Replacing inertia with resolve, disregard with dynamism. Is it possible to ever be thin again as you once were as a child? To be rid of those blobs, those fatty gobs, that upon your body have piled?

Be aware that not everyone has the mental strength to do what needs to be done in the weight area. Death has an unerring, rather fatal tendency however, to finally facilitate what had always been impossible for some during life. To get rid of the fat. Do you want to risk this terminal solution, this life diminution, by delaying or ignoring the important battle against the bulge?

Like it or not, being unduly overweight or obese creates poor health and either directly or indirectly, kills more people globally than any other condition. Hopefully my words on this crucial subject will give cause for folks to reflect more fully upon the issues raised. If just one person then determinably acts to properly take care of himself following the advice, my job here will have been done.

I'm cognisant of course, that some people regard being a bit overweight as no big deal, as long as they're happy. Okay, I accept this. You can lead a person to an oasis, show him the sparkling water, communicate to him that his life could be better or even prolonged if he drank from it, rather than imbibing multiple cans or bottles of soda, beer or whatever, as is his normal custom. But making his lips wet with the clean, unpolluted water, making him drink from the salutary pool, is a whole other story.

So this series of articles is intended for those good souls who do have a f*ck to give about their weight.  Maybe even multiple f*cks. For those recalcitrant rascals however, who don't give a f*ck, not even a partial f*ck, kindly save yourself some time, maintain the crime against your body and don't bother reading any further.

But enough for now. More on this compelling topic, this personal journey toward long term weight control, in part 4 of this series. One's body, one's physique, is so important in male/female relationships, after all. That's why we're all here, right? To meet a lovely Chinese or Asian lady of our dreams. A task it seems, that's a damn lot harder than initially I'd thought. A goal that's fraught with plenty of dry gullies and dead-end gulches. But ah, let's not worry about this right now, the trials and tribulations involved the process. This is a tale for another time. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Let's refocus back onto weight, so both you and I can optimise our chances of getting a date!

Ensure to heed the eating tips soon to be revealed. Slices of dieting wisdom that I've personally peeled. Until then, please think thin. Repel fat. Feel really good. How about that!

Weight of my body weighs down my soul

Flab and fat, way out of control

Be gone, I say! Be gone you must!

But then I saw it, a tempting crust

It tasted so sweet, it tasted divine

But how can I stop looking

like a pork-bellied swine?

Barry, forgive me if I am forgetting information you've provided earlier, but I a curious to know if you have ever had serious problems with being overweight, and if so, had issues with self control when it came to over indulging in unhealthy foods. Because it strikes me that you probably haven't. You seem like someone who has been thin and fit all your life.

I agree with you that we cannot blame anyone but ourselves if we let ourselves become unhealthy because we fail to eat properly and get enough exercise to be fit. But I do think the load that is required to be lifted can be heavier for some people than for others..

For example, if your parents, and their parents before them, all had healthy eating habits and were all active and fit, then your chances are good that you don't even have to think about eating healthy and staying fit. On the other hand if you come from a long line of junk food gorging couch potatoes, and not a day from your childhood right up to your middle age years has been spent even thinking about "being healthy", to suddenly be confronted with the need to buck up and "get healthy" must seem like someone just planted a one ton weight in front of you and told you to pick it up or die.

What are your thoughts on that?

@JohnAbbot

Barry, forgive me if I am forgetting information you've provided earlier, but I a curious to know if you have ever had serious problems with being overweight,

No, not really, John.

and if so, had issues with self control when it came to over indulging in unhealthy foods.

I used to enjoy eating heaps of ice cream when younger, but after a while, was able to wean myself totally off it. I also cut out all added sugar and salt. It wasn't easy to do all of this at the time, but I was able to achieve the goals and haven't looked back since.

Because it strikes me that you probably haven't. You seem like someone who has been thin and fit all your life.

Perceptively, you're more or less right, John.

I agree with you that we cannot blame anyone but ourselves if we let ourselves become unhealthy because we fail to eat properly and get enough exercise to be fit.

So many people make so many excuses. Total cop-outs, most of them!

But I do think the load that is required to be lifted can be heavier for some people than for others.

Yes, true enough unfortunately.

You're dead right, John. But life isn't fair. It was was and it never will be. So people from weight challenged families bear added pressures, require added discipline, in order to do what they know is right.

This is partially why I'm writing this series of articles. If I can't move overweight folks with clear logic, maybe I'll move them with insults!  Such as

"Most older, overweight people are lazy slobs with a million excuses who should know better! If this hurts your sensitive ears or paper thin skin, then good. Maybe all you plump people out there might then get off your fat asses and do something about it!"

Barry, love your dry sense of humour and your sarcasm! Here is an objection to your blog. The pictures you provided are all men when women are far more likely to be fat and obese like on the scale of 4 or 5-1. You need to be fair with these pictures you provide. hehehe, remember equality is paramount!!

Cheers mate! (^)

Barry, love your dry sense of humour and your sarcasm!

Thanks mate. Many people don't know how to take my dry wit. Sometimes it lands me into more trouble that what it's worth! Heaven knows, it's lead to some trouble for me on this site in the past, when people with low or different senses of humour (or both) appear to have had no idea what my intent was, as they misinterpreted something that I'd said in jest, that they took seriously and then abused me!    |(

That's not a bad thought. One possible problem though is most Chinese ladies are reasonably slim. It's mainly the overfed Western women who tend to be fat. This in fact reminds me of what my dad used to tell me, "I hate women with big arses!". He was referring of course, to the many plump ladies we saw every day.

Cheers buddy. Here's a beer for your interesting comments!    (beer)

@Barry1, I tend to agree with your dad's veiwpoint, I have never been attracted to women with big "arses" (love that word), we say ass not arse.lol I find women who have more athletic bums to be much more attractive to me, for example: Jessica Biel vs Jennifer Lopez both attractive, in shape women but Lopez has a huge arse whereas Biel has a smaller more muscular/athletic butt I find Beil more more appealing. I guess I am just not into booty butts.

In my many trips to China I have noticed that Chinese women have very large appetites vs western women, yet tend to stay much slimmer than their western counterparts. I think this is because western women are generally bigger boned and on average taller than asian women. Chinese diet as we all here tend to agree is much more balanced and healthier than western diets.

I have also seen more Chinese women at the local running tracks which is a good sign, mostly younger girls and wome jogging but alot of older women power walking and slower walking, men as well.

If I lived in China I doubt I would need to buy a car, maybe a scooter, as the transportation is very good and most places one wants to go is usually in walking distance. win/win Good on your body and good on the environment.

Judging from your overall comments over several blogs, @newbeginning, I think both you and my dad would have agreed on a whole heap of things, especially where women were concerned! (y)

I tend to agree with you. Though I'm sure many men would disagree. Horses for courses.

Yes, there's no doubt the average Chinese lady has a much better figure than her Western counterpart.

Chinese diet as we all here tend to agree is much more balanced and healthier than western diets.

Yes, and also, many Chinese women work harder as well. They're generally more active, including the wonderful street dancing in the evening.

I have also seen more Chinese women at the local running tracks which is a good sign, mostly younger girls and wome jogging but a lot of older women power walking and slower walking, men as well.

Yes, Western people, both men and wiomen, are more spoilt and lazier than most Chinese.

If I lived in China I doubt I would need to buy a car, maybe a scooter, as the transportation is very good and most places one wants to go is usually in walking distance. win/win Good on your body and good on the environment.

I agree completely. It's also much more dangerous driving around in China, most drivers there are clueless as to road rules, local police included!  :o

I read that drinking lots of water, taking a couple of teaspoons of Apple Vinegar everyday, eating anything but in smaller portions and exercising will get the weight off and keep it off.

"taking a couple of teaspoons of Apple Vinegar everyday, eating anything but in smaller portions and exercising will get the weight off and keep it off."

Yes, Dr Oz advocates taking a portion of vinegar every day. It's too unpleasant though for my liking.

He also advocates drinking a glass of diluted lemon juice every day. This is something that I do in fact do.

The problem with eating things in smaller portions is most people aren't disciplined enough to do this over the long term unfortunately. They'll keep at it for a week or a month or three months, but what about five or ten years?

The same for exercise. Will they make this a lifetime habit? Or will they gradually give up over the next three, six or twelve months?

Good ideas in theory though.   (y)(y)

Taking a shot of lemon juice or apple cidar vinegar has been thought to help your digestive tract, most importantly your gall bladder. The average westerner and it seems the younger generations of Chinese have too much fat(junk food) in their diet which can infiltrate their liver if not careful, gallbladder is crucial to producing bile to break down foods, too high of fat content in diet causes gall stones and fat cells in your liver. Not good. The theory is lemon juice can help break down stones and help cleanse the liver.

Did you know that Doctors can break up kidney stones with ultrasound but won't do the same with gall stones as the kidney is considered a primary organ whilst the gallbladder is not, therefore no ultrasound for breaking up stones, they want to take out your gallbladder to make money.

A good friend of mine is a natural power lifter/bodybuilder at age 50, he eats big meals but always makes sure half his plate is covered in greens of some sort. He drinks at least a gallon of water per day, more on workout days. Unlike most powerlfters he incorperates alot of cardio work into his workout schedule therefore taking care of his heart and keeping his bodyfat level down. I personally am not a fan of how body builders look, I tend to think a man or a woman who is lean and well muscled/toned looks better and healthier. I did ask him how he continues to stay focused and disciplined, he answered by saying he "lives" the bodybuilding lifestyle. Everything he does is directed to bodybuilding, he works out with other bodybuilders, he hangs out with them, competes in competitions etc. Easier to stay motivated when you are eating, breathing it daily, are around likeminded people everyday. Makes sense to me.

I personally believe that staying motivated is the hardest thing for men and women to do when getting into shape and staying in shape.

Hurting yourself through lack of knowledge, lack of recovery time and total lack of post workout stretching puts a huge downer on getting into shape. If you are 10+lbs overweight, havent done any form of exercise in 20+ years and are wanting to get back into shape, dont just start jogging, you start by walking then build up to jogging. Same goes to other forms of exercising or sports. BABY STEPS.

now where is that donut?  Gone? oh well, time to jog to the donut shop now.

Tallyho!!

Interesting information!

Not good.

You learn something new every day on this website!

The theory is lemon juice can help break down stones and help cleanse the liver.

I drink a glass of semi-sweetened lemon cordial every morning, just because Dt Oz recommended it!  (giggle)

Did you know that Doctors can break up kidney stones with ultrasound but won't do the same with gall stones as the kidney is considered a primary organ whilst the gallbladder is not, therefore no ultrasound for breaking up stones, they want to take out your gallbladder to make money.

Doctors unfortunately can be just as greedy as the rest of us, despite their already high salaries.  It was reported on the news here just yesterday, by the way. that a doctor in Brisbane was arrested for being caught taking camera shots up female's legs at the local shopping mall. He's now been stood down from his position at the local hospital. Unbelievable to risk one's career for a stupid action like this.

A good friend of mine is a natural power lifter/bodybuilder at age 50, he eats big meals but always makes sure half his plate is covered in greens of some sort. He drinks at least a gallon of water per day, more on workout days. Sounds like a very healthy guy!

Agreed.

Yes, people with similar interests tend to hang together. This is one reason why choosing one's partner can be crucial in determining how successful the relationship will be.

I personally believe that staying motivated is the hardest thing for men and women to do when getting into shape and staying in shape.

Motivation is important but to me, self-discipline is even more so.

Sound advice. Act sensibly. Listen to your body.

now where is that donut?  Gone?

What are you, a policeman?

oh well, time to jog to the donut shop now.

Tallyho!!

You have to run across the continental United States to eradicate the calories from just one donut  -  or so it seems!  :o
