Food Porn - Take #2

By Paul Fox

It’s approaching one year since Gareth Humphris posted his ‘Perils of China’ blog – “Food Porn”.  I laughed out loud as I read it because as a WeiXin user myself (WeChat), I am also constantly bombarded with pictures of food from friends and contacts on WeiXin (WeChat)

Daily questions just after 12 noon – “Are you having lunch?” – If the answer is ‘Yes’ then it’s quickly followed by – “Show Me” – at which point I must take a photo of my half-eaten lunch and pass it on for comment

If my answer is ‘No, I am not having lunch yet’, then that remark is followed by ‘Why Not? – It’s LUNCHTIME!’

The same conversation happens around 6pm most days because 6pm is ‘DINNERTIME’ in China!

Most Chinese workplaces (factories etc) seem to have their lunch-break from around noon until 2pm each day

This gives the workers time to eat and have a quick nap before returning to work until 6pm – which of course, is dinner time and ‘Time-To-Eat’

In a strange way it seems that the Chinese culture is to ‘eat-by-the-clock’ rather than to eat when one is hungry

If I take my lunch at 1pm and dinner at 7pm then I am quite happy to do so, but many Chinese people would say that is quite ‘LATE’ to eat

‘Oh, it’s noon – we MUST eat!’  - ‘Why?’ – “Because it’s lunchtime!” – “Are you hungry?” – “Not really, but it’s lunchtime so it’s time to eat!” – This would be a typical conversation and the same would apply at 6pm

If it’s a bowl of rice and a Brussel sprout, then no photos are required – but anything ‘delicious’ will require a photo (as Gareth has pointed out)

However, the reason for this blog is not just to remind everyone of what Gareth wrote about, but to show you how his ‘Food Porn’ has evolved recently……

Pictures of roasted chicken wings and steamed fish can get quite boring after a while, but take a look at the photos I have loaded up here – you can send me as many photos as possible of this kind of ‘Food Porn’  and I will NEVER get bored!

I have no idea where they originally came from, nor do I know where this kind of food is served in restaurants (if at all) – but EVERYTHING that you see here is edible, and I for one think it’s fantastic!

Paul, you mention you don't know where these dishes originated but can we assume from the writing on the photos that it was all somewhere in China?

You are no doubt right that every one of these items is totally edible, but given the amount of work that went into creating them I suspect my conscience might kick in and object to the act of chowing down on these little works of art.

Interesting and fun read, thanks.

As part of my work, I attend plenty of wedding receptions. Your photos here reminded me of some of the exquisite wedding cakes that I see from time to time that more resemble works of art.

Sometimes costing well over a thousand dollars each, some of these magnificent cakes are simply too beautiful looking to eat. Too much artistry and work has gone into them. One wonders though, if this is the case - why make them in the first case? Do some people really have more money than they know what to do with? (giggle)

Those "food porn" pictures are made in japan, a country which famous for porning all sort of things :P

The clues are the Japanese style brown curry and the rolled eggs and of course the cute characters.

From Wikipedia,
Kyaraben or charaben (キャラ弁?), a shortened form of character bento (キャラクター弁当 kyarakutā bentō?), is a style of elaborately arranged bento (Japanese boxed lunch) which features food decorated to look like people, characters from popular media, animals, and plants.[1] Japanese homemakers often spend time devising their families' meals,[2] including their boxed lunches.

Originally, a decorated bento was intended to interest children in their food and to encourage a wider range of eating habits. It has now evolved to the point where national contests are held.[3]

If you google "Kyaraben" , there are more great examples.
The love of the children produced Kyaraben

Other countries 'Food Porn" is depending on who they are intended to impress ]:)

Hello Paul,
Came across your post and got a serious chuckle.
Thanks.
I agree with you about the eating thing "on time" through my interaction with several Oriental women.
"Have you eaten yet"? "What are you eating"? "Show me NOW"!
Geeze Louise, Ling, Teresa, whatever your name may be,...I know when I need to eat.
Stop this broken record,...please !!

I understand that for many ladies the question of food intake is a sign of concern and caring.
This is greatly appreciated. (happy)
I feel that if a lady were to say something like;
"Hey babe,...I know you just woke up but,... I want you to remember to eat when you are ready". "I have concern you may forget and,... I just want you to be healthy".
This would be received so much better than some commandment from a "Bulldog Mama" with overtones of being somehow less than OK if one did not comply.
Just a suggestion ladies. :)

Now,...let us observe closely the last photo of your post,...the "topless bather".
Is that a tasty slice of pickled ginger for the lower covering or,...a triangle of tuna denoting a different sort of (uhm...) "fragrance" ?? ;)
Is that grain cellulite covering the entire body representing a certain age/life experience ??
All so tastefully placed on pool of what might be interpreted as "sewage stew".

I certainly mean NO disrespect to the creator of this entre' because it is imaginative and if it were not palatable,.. it would not sell.
However,...I perceive a certain "subliminal" message.
If this figurine could speak,..."Here I am, enticing and delectable but,...I come with my own bowl of shit".
Brothers,...if you happen to encounter a "dish" like this and you wish to partake, please remember,...you don't have to eat the whole plate (unless you have married it)!! (rofl)

In the future it would be most enjoyable and entertaining to see more creations from this chef.
Perhaps on a bed of gentle greens in a kneeling position of respect and gratitude.
Or, what the hell,... Total Acceptance (all fours) !!

Thanks again and Bumms,...:x (I meant) Thumbs up. (y)
Later,
Gongji

The title of this article was intriguing, Paul - "Food Porn".

I can only assume you were referring to the pair of naked rice people at the top of the article, each having a bath?

Or did it refer to the saucy (if you'll please pardon the pun!) picture of the sexy rice lady wearing a revealing (and by the looks of it, topless!) bikini in the bottom picture. (rofl)

Hello again Paul.
Re: "Food Porn -Take #2" and "Hello, Goodbye / I am The Walrus".
I have just discovered that the "Topless Bather" in this post is my "Pornographic Princess" !!
Oh,...there's a knock at the door.
It's Miss Semolina Pilchard.
I'd best attend while she's "let her knickers down".
I just can't understand why she would want to kick Edgar Allen Poe ??
Must be an "elementary penguin" .
(rofl)(rofl)

@Barry1

The title 'Food Porn' was taken from Gareth's original blog on the subject. He was referring to the amount of food pictures he receives each day from friends

If they WERE 'Porn Pictures' I doubt he would complain - lol

@YingTingYu
Thanks for your comments but you have 'lost me completely' with Miss semolina and Edgar Allen Poe (rofl)

Perhaps our humour is a little different, but I have just been having a nice chat with that famous German lesbian - Fanny Schmeller

@paulfox 1
I apologize for the communication breakdown.
I was using some quotes from the Beatles song "I Am The Walrus".

When I saw the "topless bather"shot I was reminded of "Miss Semolina" the noodle head/hair,...so common these days, and also the Frank Zappa selection,...
"Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy".

"I could of swore that her hair was made of rayon,
She wore a Milton Bradley crayon,
But she was something I could lay on", etc.....

I hope your discussion with Ms.(?) Schmeller went well.
I sense we are on the same page.

There are more articles to come from me when John finds time to read and hopefully,... approve.

Peace,
Gongji

@YinTingYu
Thanks for putting me straight on that - I was getting worried for a while lol

Previously you said -

"I understand that for many ladies the question of food intake is a sign of concern and caring.
This is greatly appreciated.
I feel that if a lady were to say something like;
"Hey babe,...I know you just woke up but,... I want you to remember to eat when you are ready". "I have concern you may forget and,... I just want you to be healthy".

To which I would politely reply - "Thanks for your concern honey, however I am hardly likely to forget to eat since my empty, rumbling belly and the feeling of starvation will remind me better than any clock" - lol

It's funny that we are back on that subject because a couple of days ago I was having my usual morning chat with 'My lady' in China who had woken up late for work and had no time to eat breakfast

Around 10am she sent me a message which simply said 'I'm starving!" - so of course I told her she should eat something

However, it was NOT 'breakfast time' and was also NOT 'lunchtime' so she would wait until noon and then have a good lunch

............I rest my case, your honour....
