Panda in Plum Garden of East Lake

三月三日(星期天),晴—— 武汉东湖梅园,以及韭菜饺子

The 3rd, March, Sunday, Clear —— Plum Garden of East Lake in Wuhan & Chive Dumplings

The end of February, I got two tickets of Plum Garden of East Lake. So I invited auntie Guan to go there to enjoy the beautiful flowers. Auntie Gan’s husband had passed away for 6 years. She lives in the same unit with me, so I asked her charging a kye of my home which is the kiss of death for single life.

A summer Sunday before several years, I went to East Lake, read in ChuTianLou all day, and was not at all aware of leaving my key into home, until returned home at dusk. I was no way going into my home. When the neighbour of the sixth floor whose flat was on interior decoration, their worker shouldered a long wood to come up my floor. He putted one side of the wood on my next-door neighbor’s window sill, and another side on my window sill of my enclosed balcony, then foot steps on the wood, hands supported the frames of awning, moved to my room, opened my window, jumped into my room, then opened my door in my home for me. It was the breathtaking scene that took place on my home of the seventh floor on the summer of 2004. Thereafter, I have to put a key in auntie Guan’s home in case of need.

Sunday morning, auntie Guan and I took 402 bus to come into Plum Garden of East Lake. Blossom full branches were anywhere, there were a kind of prune trees which bloomed red and withe plum blossoms on one tree, they are very precious. As enjoyed the beautiful flower sea, we also picked much more wild chives, this was our windfall. For treasured our fruit of labor, I was busy three days in my spare time later. I had to go to supermarket to get pork etc, made dumplings with my own hands, did not waste one chive. Anyway, we had a very good Sunday, and big harvests.

Next week, I have two female colleagues who had eaten my dumplings which was the first making of mine. Thanks for the person who invented the machine making dumpling skin, so I got the dumpling skins easily. Even kill me, I would not roll out dough, let alone so small and thin a dumpling skin, this was the reason that I’d never tried to make dumplings. There were wild chives, pork, fresh bamboo shoots, carrot, ginger, egg, chicken powder, olive oil in my stuffing. Inexperience, I had to boil after make one dumpling, tasted the salty to season the stuffing, then make a dumpling again, boiled, tasted, until satisfied. The skins were very good, maybe as well as the olive oil, boiled dumplings presented translucence, the stuffings may be seen indistinctly. My colleagues were full of praise for my dumplings. My first try was very successful.

This is a very fun blog Cao Hui. I loved the description of the guy getting into your place to recover your keys for you. And letting your Aunt have a key being "the kiss of death for single life" really struck a chord with me. Wonderfully put and so true.

BTW, because you did the Chinese and English paragraph by paragraph I took the opportunity to compare your translation to Google's (or it might have been Bing at that moment) and yours was clearly superior. They obviously have a long way to go yet.

Thanks for the enjoyable read.

Perhaps either one of you could address this question. I am wondering if you could recommend a website, course or app that would be useful in learning Chinese. I am a beginner so I don't know any Chinese whatsoever. I ask because there is so much out there on the web and thought perhaps with your vast experience you could point me in the right direction. Thanks.

@JohnAbbot - Reading "the kiss of death for single life" also caused me to have the same reaction. However, I don't think it is as bad as it sounds. If you meet someone who really is your match, "love will find a way" as they say. So I wouldn't worry about it too much, just enjoy the company of your Aunt roommate in the meantime.

@CaoHui - You are a true writer. I love reading your blogs. Especially the ones about you and your son. They touch my heart. Keep them coming.
